Really strong smell of alcohol at first, however the taste and finish are wonderful. Stron tastes of cherry and light hints of sugar cane. Very light drinking

Very light. I have had this wine before and remember it having a bit more punch on the nose but it has settled very well. The finish is much smoother now. We enjoyed with cheese and stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer.

More savory than my last time with this. Tar, heme, nettles, balsam, and a meatiness alongside with subtle florals (more violet than rose) and dark nebbiolo fruit. It has breadth and depth, ripe tannins and good overall balance. I think this producer did pretty well handling the heat in '11. Structured and very enjoyable if not as delicious as it was in Perno last year.

Dark cherry fruits and balsamic notes on the nose. More dark fruits, ferrous and with an aromatic herbal lift on the nose and palate. Structured and beautifully balanced. The warmth of the vintage seems to play well with the house style, gaining some flesh, yet keeping it balanced and structured. Quite long. Held its own in strong company.

Balsamic notes, cedar, some dried fruit, sweet cherries, some herbal Chinato notes. Medium bodied, with medium-high tannin and medium acidity. Good length. A pretty but a little simple Barolo, could use a touch more freshness. Good price though. Goes well with food. A pleasure to drink.

Dinner at Vinoteca Centro Storico, Serralunga d'Alba: I asked Alessio what is, in his opinion, the best under the radar, up and coming Barolo I don't yet know about? He brought back a bottle of this wine ... Nice aromatics. Dark cherries, a touch of cassis and spices. On palate, 2011 lift, but balanced and controlled. Traditionally made, elegant and in good proportion. Quite accessible now. A good, honest Barolo. (By coincidence, two evenings later Thierry and I were back at Centro Storico and met the Cascina Fontana owners who are related to Bartolo Mascarello and follow his winemaking approach).

Combines the accessibility of the vintage with the natural grip of Barolo. There are notes of tar, red fruits, lipstick and flora. It is generous with crisp fruit flavours and loads of savoury nuance.

(At BBR's Italian Tour 2015) :: Quite primary, with elements of leaf and tar and spices hidden underneath. A decent finish and good structure, but I was hoping for a bit more. I found the '10s wonderfully composed, and the '11s feel a different game.
