A private dinner (Restaurant Atelier **, Munich, Germany): Classic Wachau style, moderate alcohol, mirabelle and white pepper, lovely balance, ripe and vinous, slightly low acidity but elegant, good length. Best served cool, as it does lack a little cut and precision.

On the PnP, a light touch of CO2, medium straw color, not what I'd call perfectly clear (which is just fine for me). Aromas are lime sherbet, wet stones, thyme, white pepper and a whiff of petrol. Palate is medium>medium+, mouth-filling, broad. Flavors largely follow the nose, with avg>avg+ acids, a long finish (though lacking detail and complexity at this stage). Some nice tang and verve on the attack, but it wanes just a touch before it comes back on the finish - kind of like a boomerang, so all is good. Should prove a welcome companion tonight, along with a 10yr old Sagrantino, with the porchetta. 11,5% abv., thru 2022. recommended
PnP, served non-blind; natural cork (booo!!)

A bit more expressive than Schütt Federspiel. Spicy, again good fruit, mineral, fresh, longer and more intense, but still rather airy for Smaragd. A great effort for 2014. 91-93

Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): In contrast to the Federspiel, this was much fatter and denser, had more extract, and had a slightly oily texture that really turns me off. There's a fair bit of minerality, and a hint of white peach as well, but this is a much more plodding bottle.

Not very expressive on the nose at this stage - a bit of white pepper, red apples, white stone fruit. On the palate fresh and mineral, quite open and maybe a little simple, but certainly well balanced and long. But I think it lacks the depth and substance of the less challenging vintages. On the other hand it will drink much sooner and can be enjoyed while waiting for the 2013s for example. 90-91+

Wachau - fine wines from the difficult 2014 vintage, and some other treasures; 9/14/2015-9/18/2015: Closed aromatically except for a hint of wet stones; full, warm, entry with strong acid gain onto the mid-palate; shortish lemon-juice finish. 86-89P?
