  • Very thick after a 3 hour decant, smoother, lighter and a little less interesting 90 minutes later.

  • 95 because of what it is today. As with other 100 pointers, I think other reviews are biased by the critic score. No doubt this may reach Parker s rate in a few years but not today. 2.5 hours decant and a glass set apart for one more hour of air, and that last glass still showing it is not at peak (remember in a glass the oxidization is quicker). Black berries, cocoa, spice, hints of hoisin. Tannins are resolved and very balanced, but the wine is still in an early phase, color shows almost no sign of the 17 years since vintage. I would open a new bottle in 4-5 years, I don’t think even a 4 hour decant would make for the time this still requires to reach its plateau. The question with this outstanding, once in ten years bottles from non elite chateaus is that one wonders, perhaps unfairly, if they will pass the test of time, even showing at 17 years that most likely they will …if this would be a bottle of valandraud one would take for granted that it should reach the 100 points at its peak. Nonetheless, Given the fact that you can get it for about usd 350 in the market and in 5 years it could deliver an experience akin to bottles of elite st emilion s that cost double or triple that price, it’s worth considering as a good buy

  • Agree with others, this is more Napa than BDX, which is ok with me. Big and very thick, deep red fruits, tannins still a little obtrusive. Showing a few secondary notes, should be better in 5 years. Decanted for 2 hours, I’d decant longer if drinking now.

  • Chateau Faugeres Peby 2005- what an amazing wine. Robert Parker rated this 100. I am not sure what a 100 wine is, but this is very close. Its the perfect expression of Merlot, beautifully balanced, not to panic not too soft, medium legs, complex bouquet, full body, long tail.
mixed berrys, a bit of burnt chocolate- They say that this is a beef wine, but we had this with a very fresh sea trout almomdine, and it was perfect, almost a course in itself.

  • tasted blind at our night of cults and other killers (no this was not a seminar on organized religion). presumably this was one of the killers. everyone guessed it to be Napa, and a heavily extracted one at that. no surprise that its a Parker perfect. he's spot on when he says it tastes like a Beckstoffer cab but in fact has no cabernet in it. nose of boysenberry and sexy dark fruit. mouth - oaky fruit, tannic, long and very dry. big spicey wine. I find it atypical for St. Emilion

  • Huge, inward and intense, still too early to be approached, but showing glimpses of a real powerhouse worthy of the vintage. Jammy black and red fruit, some cherry liqueur and an acidic bite. Reminded me of a Schrader I had that same day.

  • Very drinkable. Classic bordeaux. Delicious in every regard to fruit, structure and texture.

  • A massive, brooding mouthful of the most concentrated grape juice imaginable. The bouquet exploded as I opened to decant. Even so it remained tight and closed up for over two hours before giving one a tantalizing glimpse of its future. Always a skeptic of 'scores,' this wine deserves the 100. With the intense fruit and bold tannins, it will be with us for at least another 30-40 years.

  • dark purple, huge wine, blackberries, dark fruits, noticeable alcohol, oaky, overblown, great wine if you like full throttle California Cabs (although 100% Merlot), not my style for a Bordeaux

  • Just coming out of its shell, the wine still shows a youthful, deep, dark color. The debut vintage for the new owner screams with its licorice, truffle, smoke and chocolate drenched black and blue fruit. The wine is dense, yet, fresh and balanced. There is length, complexity and a hedonistic, opulent texture in the finish. This should be great over the next 20 years or so. 1 hour in the decanted added a lot to the wine.

  • 66x Parker 100-Pointers from Bordeaux 1947-2010 tasted blind (Switzerland): Tasted blind. Medium purple. Nose of smoke, blue fruit, toast, tobacco, interesting and complex. Very ripe and bold on the palate with lots of structure. This is totally New World in style which has put off several tasters in the room. I thought it was within an acceptable range due to its structure, no oxidative tones. If you like it Baroque or Californian style, this may be your wine. Group score: 16.23, group rank: 58/64

  • Beautiful nose of dark fruits, tobacco, dark currant and vanilla. Nice tannins on the tongue with a long finish. I think this will age effortlessly and only get better and better with time.

  • Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Darker core with brighter dark red crimson rim; vanilla, inky, glycerin, herbs, mint, menthol, tar, high toned, hard to get past oak treatment; sweet fruit, juicy, vanilla, softer texture, pencil shavings, menthol, dark plum, tar, drying tannin in the back, wood tannin, some red cherry, alcohol on finish; was told somebody rerated this to 100!?; I can't understand how this "special cuvee" from Bordeaux is using oak this poorly treated, they need to fire the cooper and justify the price tag a bit more by using good oak; the wine seems to still be in a dumb phase just as many '05 Right Banks are, not sure if this will come together but now it is quite disappointing, was more popular amongst the New World drinkers.

  • Not surprisingly, the 2005 Cuvée Spéciale Péby, which was inaugurated in 1998, is a blockbuster. Yields were low (25 hectoliters per hectare) for this sensational 100% Merlot from 45-year old vines. The inky/black/purple color is followed by a super-rich wine boasting plenty of graphite, pain grillé, melted chocolate, black currant, blackberry, smoke, and truffle characteristics. It is extremely powerful, concentrated, and extracted. Give it a decade of cellaring and drink it over the following three decades." ~ 95+, Robert M. Parker

  • Full bodied wine that packs a punch. Recommend decanting at least 2 hours. Quite an evolution occurred during the decant, streamlining the nose to bright red fruits, cigarbox, and leather. There is strong tobacco on both nose and palate. Tannins are very up-front, but integrated well; they were never overpowering. Long, extended finish. There are many years left here; I probably won't open another bottle for 3+ years, but that still may be too early.

  • Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Black with tiny garnet rim; blackberry compote, very intense, richly packed, a bit of nail polish from the new oak, coffee, almost Italian edge to it, some green and earth in the background; soft on entry, large and expansive on the midpalate, fine chalky tannin which strengthens on the finish, dark chocolate, spicy pepper, higher alcohol, some feminine power, a bit of freshness; room to improve for sure but this is still very young; modern style but firmly planted in its terroir which I hope time will reveal.

  • A cross between a napa cab and Bordeaux in that the nose was nicely reminiscent of Bordeaux, with lots of tobacco and leather notes, with big Cali type palate. Young and almost too big, but never crossed over the line. This will be great in a few more years, though already is approaching that level.

  • Decant for two hours; the wine opens up beautifully with all the richness and flavor this designation is known for. Delicious.

  • If you like power, this is the wine. The ratio hl/ha must be a record low. It's so amazing strong, that even a Priorat on steroids will be outplaced.
Look for cherries, blackberries and top a lot of real kisch - you are there.

  • Another Set of 2005 Bordeaux (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Dark, deep purple. Overtly ripe, in fact, porty fruit with traces of herbaceousness and volatility-I didn't realize that Bordeaux was in the southern Rhone. Viscous, tremendously fruity with little detectable acidity, a touch of oregano, and late arriving round tannins. OK, I'm sure that some people will make the case that this is the second coming of '47 Cheval Blanc, but to me, the wine is simply too soupy, out of balance, and seriously threatened by the level of VA to become something special over time.

  • The Wine Club San Francisco 2005 Bordeaux (San Francisco): Tasted at the Wine Club. Opened 4+ hours but not decanted. Quick notes: There were 3 wines that stood out for me and this was one of them. This is like getting hit in the face with a wet towel. Over ripe and super saturated fruit on the nose. On the palate: sweet raisin, some port notes, chocolate and cocoa; very exotic with dessert wine qualities. I don't think you will need food with this. In a class by itself, which may or may not be a good thing. Very Good to Excellent.

  • Superb. I was somewhat skeptical about 2005 being an unparalleled vintage and so on... This(and a couple of other bordeaux ) sets all doubts aside for me. On nose, incense among other beautiful things. The fruit is so pure that its is almost like someone sprayed some fruity perfume in my mouth. Of course, too young to drink now but would definitely be in the 97+ range when it is ready.
