Pretty awesome tonight. Lovely, lively, juicy, elegant, light. Black olive and blackberry nose. Pure syrah fruit and savory olives with an elegant body. Pure deliciousness, and now some secondary goodness.

Final bottle from a full case purchased from the Dutch importer in 2016. Unlike the bottle tasted in October 2021, this is immediately ready to go after opening, a light (12% ABV) but lovely Syrah, with crisp red berry fruit and energetic minerality, a relatively cool style in keeping with vintage, the aromas are more about flowers and white pepper than about smoky bacon and black pepper, fresh and direct, dry but with a nice silky souplesse, complete finish with good length. Uncomplicated but very charming. Marvellous QPR (this was € 13.90 at the time).

Eleventh bottle from a full case purchased from the Dutch importer. On the first day it is true to type but a bit skinny, and it is wonderful to behold how it hasn't only held up, but has blossomed after two days in the open bottle (about half was left), with wonderful aromas ripe and crunchy red berries and roses.

I love the wines from Clape. However this was a bit of a disappointment. At first I thought it was a TCA bottle. However after two hours it blow off. Typical Syrah nose and palate but with a green touch. A bit thin. Maybe it is the weaker/in-between vintage which has left its marks. On the lower level of Northern Rhone reds it is maybe time to drink up?
Tenth bottle from a full case. From a weaker vintage in the Northern Rhône, this is cool and slender, fresh and youthful, with black olives and granite, hints of roses and funk, sour cherries; direct and pure, crisp acidity and light but firm tannins, very good resonance and length. It doesn’t have the ripeness of a better vintage, it is on the lean side, but the minerally drive and energy are lovely. Just don’t go looking for gobs of big, black, ripe fruit.

Yummi - pleasantly surprised by the nose and taste. This wine somewhat resembles their “top of the shell” Cornas - more than Zi expected. Maybe because of the bottle age? Blackcurrant, cowshed, olives and dried meat. Great acidity and actually a decent rendition of “the real thing” from their top wine. Buy if you want to try the domaine. Skip this wine and upscale to the Cornas, if you really want to understand the hype surrounding this classic domaine.

Ninth bottle from a case purchased from the Dutch importer en primeur. Not decanted. Not complex but fresh and pure in style; open and aromatic nose with black pepper and red berries, roses and peaches, but not as radiant as the previous bottle; firm but silky tannins on the palate, light to medium body (12%) ABV; quite lean on the finish with a liquorice note and a dried fruit character that indicates maturity. Good length. Completely ready, intact on the second day so it will clearly last a few years longer, but I do not see any upside from here. My records show that I paid € 13.95 per bottle. Wonderful value for a weekday Clape!

Crisp, bright and a bit lean right now. Cranberry, pepper, raspberry. I would really give this at least 2-3 more years as it will improve. We loved it with spicy pasta since it cut through the richness but wish we had more bottles so we could drink this when it will be even better.

Near opaque at core, rubied rim; Brett quickly blows off, funky, farmyardy, faded leather; fresh feel to clean fruit, spicy; lean finish. This has time in hand, but unlikely there is further improvement to come. This cleaned up & rounded out 24 hours later.

Not decanted. Delightful, youthful, spicy minerality and energetic freshness, intense but relaxed flavours, roses and peaches, cherries and spices, an uncomplicated but incredibly pure expression of low-intervention Syrah on granite soils, crisp and playful, light to medium body (12% ABV), excellent persistence. Really shining today.

It has been 15 months, almost to the day, since my previous tasting note and the wine is now starting to give an insight into its true disposition. It now clearly displays the cool, linear and fresh character of the 2014 vintage. The approach to (unoaked) wine making is hands-off and natural, which explains the relaxed and pure style, the unfettered Syrah character, the clearly defined fruit (cherry, peach, green apple), and the mildly funky notes. Elegant is not the word for this wine, but it does have an innate mineral energy, lovely balance and weight (12% ABV), and good length. Has entered its plateau of maturity, drink now - 2022+.

VinoLaprisco Tasting (Restaurant De Karpendonkse Hoeve *, Eindhoven, Netherlands): Paired with the 2010 Crozes-Hermitage from Domaine Alain Graillot. Less farmyardy than the previous bottle (but not without a hint of the stables), with beautifully pure, sweet fruit on the nose and a very energetic, fresh and tight palate. Not decanted. This bottle is quite farmyardy on the nose (Elizabeth rightly exclaimed: this is liquid dung!), and displays a note of camphor, but there is wonderful fruit underneath of cherries and peaches, floral notes (roses, violets), crushed black pepper, great mineral energy, tight and fresh, slender and pure, light to medium body (12% ABV) but with intense flavours, very good length. Not decanted. Youthful purple colour, not extremely deep; very aromatic nose with a wonderful sense of purity and typicity, fresh and mineral, cherries and peaches, violets and roses, black pepper and black olive tapenade, only the slightest whiff of barnyard; the palate displays lovely and moreish, juicy fruit, has a light to medium body (12% ABV), and strikes an effortless balance with the vibrant but ripe acidity, cool minerality and gently extracted skin phenolics, marries a transparent style to good flavour intensity; good resonance on the finish and ditto length. Wonderfully digestible, delicious already and should drink well until 2020 at least - it does not give the impression that it will shut down very much. The QPR of this "baby-Clape" is off the charts.

So tangy and alive! How can a wine this ethereally light carry this much character? It’s listed at 12.5ABV which is not surprising. It feels weightless at times like it’s built on air, yet the palate is deep, savory, saturated and tongue-staining. This is like a library of Syrah nuances: Mediterranean black olive for dayyyys, CRAZY violets, sun-drenched blackberry, herbs, smoke, black pepper, baking cocoa, licorice, leather and on and on. It’s simply 100% pure high quality Northern Rhone fruit with no new oak whatsoever, so the only other things flavoring this wine are the wind, rain, soil and sky—and perhaps the “seasoning” in their cellars. Based on how delicious and approachable right off the bat—and how open knit it was the next day, it’s more a great candidate for short term enjoyment. Drink 2016 - 2021

Dinner at Home; 4/29/2016-4/30/2016 (Fremont, CA): Coravin 4/30/16: Purple in color; nose is medium aromatic, nice concentration of ripe blueberry, almost plums, smoked wood, iodine, with air some meaty/gamey aromas come out; palate is medium to full bodied, surprisingly high acid (medium-plus to high), tannins are approachable and well integrated, not drying at all, plenty of juicy fruit throughout the palate; finish is short-medium. For an entry-level cuvee, this is quite good. Youthful in terms of its fruit and complexity, but still approachable, wonderful freshness and depth of fruit, excellent balance, only requires a bit of effort on the nose to discern all the complexity and the finish is a bit short. Nice for the price, and I'm interested what the upper level cuvees are like. 89-90 5/2/16: Finished the bottle. The nose seems even more aromatic with iodine, meat, black fruit; palate is smooth, medium bodied, tannins fully integrated despite its youth, easy to drink; finish is medium length today. Seems like a step up from when first tasted, and definitely worth its $30 price tag. 90-91 After a few hours it develops a tartness on the palate. It still has density of fruit and isn't shrill, but it is tart. Unclear whether this will improve with age or if it's just a style of the wine. Back to 89-90.

Léger et plaisant. Belle pureté de fruit. Pas très dense ni long, un peu végétal, fait penser à un jolie petit Crozes. 86-87

Léger Brett , un peu funky. Bonne acidité , un peu surette , cerises noires, tapenade.tombe à plat rapidement . Beau milieu de bouche . Un peu décevant .

California and Rhône Syrah (SF Wine Trading Company): Purple tint. Funky and licorice on the nose. Medium weight, nicely textured. Black fruit and creosote, tight minerally, tannic finish. Pretty serious stuff.

Good heady nose, inky dark, lots of black olive and yeah I could see a bit of stemminess/vegetative note but not in a bad way today. Good jazzy fruit galore.

Medium ruby. Aggressively stemmy aromatics with some creosote. Medium weight. Grippy black fruit and tannin. Don't care for the balance here. This "wine of friends" was hardly friendly today.

Nez charmant de fruit noir, olives et tapenade. La bouche est avenante, assez charnue, ronde, végétale (vendange entière), c'est sympa mais plutôt simple et court. Bien, mais à ce prix je passe. 87 pts
