  • Still has a soft profile, which is unusual for a Napa 2013. A little more structured than our last bottle three years ago, but will not be returning to its stellar early days. Enjoyable, but I wouldn’t wait much longer.

  • This has declined since our prior note. Much softer profile than before. Possibly a sleepy phase for this wine, will hold our remaining bottle for a while to see.

  • Everything about this wine pushed the envelope but never went overboard for my palate. Super ripe dark fuits with a touch of flowers on the nose. Full bodied almost port like but not quite. Reminds me a bit of an old school Merus with Mark Herold. I enjoy this style but it can can get to be too much for some.

  • The bell curve on this wine was fairly low and quick. Its apex showed some nice purple core fruit, but it had a bit of a plum effect on the back end that sat on the grip and made it taste a little overly-ripe. This has declined since my last experience with it. There were some wild blackberry flavors that helped to pick up the pace somewhat, but it quickly turned into a more plush and soft profile overall. Drink now. 91-92? points.

  • Identical to my notes from October 2015. This wine has a lot of verve and energy, packed with coiled-up red and blue fruit flavors. Very good now; will hopefully be greater in another year or two. Needed a couple hours in the decanter to open up. Still a bit restrained.

    94-95 points with a point or two more potential in 2018. My other half gave it a solid 97 points, as she loved the intensity of the fruit and vivaciousness of the popping flavor profile overall. I felt it still had a little more working out to do in terms of the broadening and deepening of the distinctive flavors and greater filling-in on the mid-palate. A good example of GIII fruit. I much prefer this 2013 to its 2012 counterpart.

  • Decanted and drank over the next hour. Layers of berry fruit coiled with vanilla/caramel notes. Medium finish with more fruit. Well-integrated tannins. Delicious.

  • Coravin Marathon with Tim, Ben, Michael (Wingtip): Pickle juice (VA?)
    Super strong oak influence - vanilla, baking spices, sawdust.
    Fruit: super raisinated black currant.

    - Full bodied
    - High alcohol - 15%? (actually 15.8%)
    - medium acid
    - medium tannins (low for Cabernet!)

    Tons of new oak on the palate - bitter.

    This is too overripe and under-structured for my preference.

  • 100% valley floor cab, already extremely well integrated. One hour decant, then followed over several more hours, super the whole time. The nearly 16% alcohol level not even noticeable. Has at least ten years of greatness ahead of it. Suggest an hour or two in the decanter if drinking in the near term.

  • This wine did not exist on CT yet, so I had to create it. Tasted at the Mayacama Country Club at a Boich tasting.

    Opened for less than 30 minutes with a brief decant, the Boich GIII is all about vibrant, pure fruit and youthful energy. Typical of many of the top quality 2013 Napa Cabernets, the Boich GIII pops out first with its beautiful red, blue, and black berry fruits zinging across the palate. The purity of fruit here is impressive, with sweet tannins and notes of raspberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, cassis, and some spice.

    At the moment, drinking a little like a high end Cabernet Franc in terms of its higher-toned blue and red berry fruit profile. But there is a richness here that is just waiting to come out. Just a slight hint of that GIII earthiness that is sometimes reminiscent of the site.

    As winemaker Jeff Ames (of Tor Wines) stated, the 2013 GIII is all about the layers and layers of fruit; whereas the 2013 Boich Wall Road Vineyard (Mount Veeder) is all about a brambly backbone and structure (see my CT notes on the 2013 Boich Wall/Mount Veeder from 10/18/15). Right now, I preferred the GIII over the Mount Veeder.

    As far as the GIII, a generous decant will do it well, but two years+ in the bottle will likely form this wine into something even more special. 95 at the moment, but I think this wine will quickly evolve into an even greater experience over time.
