Deuxième vin du grand cheval blanc dans une grande année. Au nez, assez réservé avec des notes de mures. En bouche, plein, complet avec des nuances sur des fruits noirs, un peu de cuir. Débute son plateau. 93 sur 100.

This 05 Petit Cheval is not its little brother but, it’s a close relative.
The nose reveals, ripe, ruby; blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, stewed black plum, blackberries, plum and baked strawberries. Sweet tarry, anise, graphite, burnt charcoal, limestone minerals, wet clay, crushed dry rocks, touch of pepper, dark berry cola, herbaceous notes, pine sap, eucalyptus, bay leaf, steep black tea, dark red, withering flowers with violets.
The body is; full, round, ruby and lush. The tannins are well rounded with firmness. There is still one to decades of life ahead. The structure and tension are still a teenager. The length & balance just starting to live up to what it can be. Ripe, ruby; blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, stewed black plum, blackberries, plum, baked strawberries with creamy raspberries haunting the palate. Sweet tarry, anise, graphite, burnt charcoal, limestone minerals, wet clay, crushed dry rocks, touch of pepper, dark berry cola, dark chocolate, light caramel, liquid mocha, light medium spice, herbaceous notes, pine sap, eucalyptus, bay leaf, steep black tea, fresh tobacco, moist clay, dark rich turned earth, dark red, withering flowers with violets. Beautifully round acidity. The glorious, sexy, full, ripe, lush, elegant, extremely balanced finish is delicious and persistent for minutes.

Very slow evolution but noticing the 05s have regained power and weight. Deep ruby red with blackish core, nose of minerals, brambly raspberries and dark red fruits. Solid entry on the palate with power, very good complexity mid palate with bright and dark red berries, some milk chocolate and a decently long finish with tannins in the back and a bit of toffee. Medium to full bodied. This need a few more years.

My one and only bottle of the admired 2005 vintage .... so here we go. Paired with slowly cooked pork cheeks, braised chicory and creamy mash potatoes.
+ Preparation - 1/2 bottle in decanter, filled up decanter from bottle throughout evening + Colour - medium red, a hint of purple when waltzing it up into the sunlight + Nose - red fruits, sweet cherry, cassis, flowers, delicate, finesse, smoky, slightly woody + Taste - very soft, though powerful, abundance of red fruits, round + Finish - very long, intense, wow, herbal ( laurel ), with time more dried fruits
Great wine .... drink now ( but give it sufficient O2 ) or keep for at least a couple of years.

Decanted and drank over 3 hours. Appearance was clear, deep ruby. On the nose, pronounced intensity, with aromas of black pepper spices, tobacco (cigar box), leather, earth, blackcurrants, plums, capsicum, figs, pencil shavings and vanilla. Meat and mocha with more air. Developed. On the palate, medium+ acidity, medium+ (grippy) tannin, medium+ bodied, long finish, with flavours of blackcurrants, ripe red and black fruits, tobacco, plums, vanilla and graphite. Medium alcohol. Flavours intensity pronounced. Clearly, it was Cabernet Franc dominated but it wasn't overly green or herbaceous. No doubt it was very good quality here. Will definitely hold up well for the next 5 to 10 years and more but drinking very well now too. Complex, balanced, good length and depth. From a blend of 57% Cabernet Franc and 43% Merlot.

Decanted for 2.5 hrs. Nose of sweet fruit, spices, plums and cassis. The wine is still quite young and nose still showed some alcohol and was a little light. The palate was quite fruity with sweet cassis, blackberries and oak. Finish was pretty long and lasting. The overall package was still tightly wound, lean and slightly underwhelming. Might possibly need more time.

Best bottle so far, this wine is in its early drinking window. Dark ruby red, crisp nose of raspberries, cassis, mushrooms, plums, sweet pipe tobacco, spice cake, toast. Fat entry on the palate, great acidity and balance with black and red fruits coating the palate, medium to full bodied, beginning to show complexity and pedigree, finishes decently long with sweet integrated tannins. Very nice and built to age. Now I'm eager to try the Grand Vin in about 5 years or so.

A private tasting (Jan-Dirk Taams' residence, Groot-Ammers, Netherlands): Much lighter nose than the Clos Dubreuil, red cherries, warmth from the oak, hint of spice; the palate displays lots of juicy and fresh fruit, bright acidity, little oak, light but well-integrated tannins; very good length. Slightly underripe perhaps? 57% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot.

From a blend of 57% Cabernet Franc and 43% Merlot, the wine pops with caramel, black cherry and mint on the nose. There is a nice sweetness to the fruit, round textures and a medium body that makes this ready for prime time drinking today.

Consumed @ THE VOL 94 in Pasadena. Strong initial flavor, but lacking something in the middle. Tastes the same caliber as cheaper $30 Bordeaux wines. Will never buy Petit Cheval again considering its inflated price. Actually, I will never buy a 2nd wine again.

nose - earthy, sweet tobacco (like the apple tobacco used in a waterpipe) mouth - dry, lovely, refined plum, cranberry, cherry. hints of tobacco. suave tannins. overall an elegant fruit punchy flavor is what I come away with. delicious and sleek. nothing over the top

Decanted and aerated for two hours+ and drank over another hour over dinner with friends. Deep ruby red color, very slight hint of aging. On the nose, blackberries, truffles, raspberries, cocoa and pipe tobacco, with blueberries evolving. On palate, very velvety entry, medium weight though gaining a bit more weight with age since the last time I tasted this wine. Black fruits and mocha mid palate, excellent acidity, tannins very fine and more or less integrated with a decent finish. 92+ and would rate higher if the finish were longer.

Initially tannic and lacking elegance or finesse. But after 4 hours decant (in a very wide base decanter) and some time in glass, this turned into a fine wine indeed, with all of the elegance and finesse that one would expect from a Cheval Blanc. This is not the somewhat open and hedonistic wine that I tasted in 2010. It is a currently closed wine that took 4 plus hours to turn into what it will be. Suggest the drinking window start in 5 years.

Allowed to breathe for 7 hours and drank over 3. I would decant this the next time and open 12 hours before hand. Extremely lush with light tannins. Complete and round are the two descriptors that I can use about this wine. Hope that this ages gracefully and doesn't peak before I can open the other two.

Taste at Cut. So so so young. Tight but fresh with lighter berries, super new leather saddle. Some light barnyard notes. Undoubtedly Bordeaux. Earth and spice. Sadly, just okay for me. Maybe too young to critique even.

Lovely lovely wine, opened up with 2 hours+ of decanting, rekindled my love affair with Cheval's second wine of 2005 after a few underwhelming bottles in the past year. Great aromas of blacberries, truffles, spices, jam, fully reflected on the palate following a silky attack on the palate, medium body, black cherry color, decent but not outstanding finish.

Rich, red black in color. Some sweet soil with a hint of red fruit and musky overtones on the nose. Very light on the palate with a little tannic grip showing, but overall there is some emptiness in the mid palate behind the weak combination of fruit, soil, and acidity.

Should have decanted longer. Very nice wine indeed, well rounded delicious Cab Franc, dark red and black fruits, some sweetness to the nose and palate although with hints of greenness. Medium bodied, great elegant finish.

Surprisingly enjoyable. Very different from the grand vin. For a 2005 vintage wine, it was open, well balanced. Round is the best word to describe it. Not complex, but lovely.

Colour - Ruste. Nose - Lovely complexity. Red current, black current. Body - Medium light body (perhaps abit light for a Cheval Blanc). Black current, red current, good complexity. Overall, lovely. Tasted at the LCBO tasting counter. Have a bottle in the cellar, waiting.

Nice freshness, fruit, red fruit. Cranberry, but actually rather soft overall. After about 20 minutes, getting some floral elements. Palate stays rather cool, almost crisp, yet there is a velvety texture – though stays with a cranberry red berry taste profile.
