A special treat. I have enjoyed the 2012 Merlot as a lovely value wine. This cab was mistakenly included with recent case I bought of Merlot. The cab was smooth and rich with nose that opened up after three hours decanting.

Mature, the wine had cherry and red fruits on the nose followed by soft mature fruit flavors of more cherry and red fruits that were slightly faded. The finish was silky smooth of medium length with completely resolved tannins and just a tad of oak. A bit simple overall, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Drink up, this wine won't get better as the fruit is definitely starting to fade.

Light garnet in color, this possesses a beguiling & complex aroma. The nose is of cedar & currants. Requires a modest 45-60 minute decant. Chocolate, blackberries, blueberries. Smooth mouthfeel finishing with dusty tannins.

Staff Favorites (Farpointe Cellar): The nose was mainly coffee and chocolate, with some blueberry and vanilla. The palate had mocha, coffee, blueberry, cedar, cherry, and vanilla.

Wine Spectator Grand Tasting (Marriott Hotel, San Francisco, CA): Big Ed has delivered a very good Howell Mountain Cab. Flavors/aromas of blackberry, blueberry, cherry, cocoa powder, sweet oak and a touch of menthol. Rich, complex wine with well integrated tannins. Nice long finish.

Still lots of fruit. Tons of mint/menthol on the nose. Was delicious. Easily 5 years left in this one.

This wine has aged nicely. Great balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins.
