My last bottle of this was a little tired. Seems that was years ago, and those showed very well indeed. Well developed tertiary notes and vibrant. Well balanced - a delight.

On opening, some cassis notes. Decanted 1 hour. Lots of tertiary notes on nose (leather?). Something of a note of dry cider on the palate, possibly brett related.
Better second day, brett note had blown off leaving nice tertiary notes on the nose and palate with some dried fruit.
Definitely interesting, very impressive wine for only £10

Deep garnet colour, medium nose with some black-berry fruit and spice. Medium acidity, tannins integrated, little oak perception remaining. Medium finish, nice mature cuvee, good to very good for a £10 wine.

Past its best, but having a fine old age ! Dark brick red, brown rim. Not much nose. Dry on the tongue and thinning, but lingering toffees fruits. Not the leather or forest of old Rhône, but a similar feel. Something like cedar / tobacco leaf. But with a taste of plum. At this age, only for those who like older wines.

September 2019 - Drink up, I reckon. Hearty wine that is showing its maturity. Fruit has essentially gone. Tannins are just soft enough to be enjoyable. Earthy, leathery. Forest floor. Great wine to ring in the autumn.

Coravin: Ruby-brown. Rather closed nose, but slight leather and brett. Some black fruit underlying. Chalky tannins are slightly too present. Long finish. Out of bottle: Similar notes as above, but would characterise as austere in terms of fruit. Good pricing though. 83-85.

Readers who still have this wine should consider drinking up this wine. There is still fruit left but I left my previous encounter last year was a better experience. Fruit is slowly fading away.

Very chewy tannins. The tannins really last with this wine, up to an hour or more after it's finished. Some fruit, but far from primary, or anywhere close to the fore. Mushroom, hint of Brett, that's where it's at. And tannins. Good with fatty food, or if you like your tea black, without milk.

I love this wine. For a wine that cost £10. This is AMAZING! What a nose. Reminds me a lot about Chateau Musar. Give it sometime to evolve in your glass. I wouldn't decant it. Animal, Brett (just right amount), warm, sweet fruit nose, spice. Aromatic. Full bodied on the palate. Very smooth. Tannins integrated. I will seek out more bottles of this. Good job the wine society for sourcing this gem! I think Domaine Pichard is amazing.

Initially, it has a brief hint of mushroom, meat, then mild black fruit and quite grippy tannins, and a lingering stemmy tang. This must have been forbidding in its youth.
Tannins reduced somewhat with air, and it started getting a bit sour after a couple of hours. I wouldn't decant for a long time. It's not a powerful wine, just elegant.

Deep colour, garnet at the rim, but quite youthful looking. Mature nose of leather, tobacco, but with plenty of underlying black fruits. Palate is refined, elegant and balanced, reflecting the nose. Tannins are still present and become firmer with air. Medium finish. Great wine, and a bargain, especially for those who wish to get an introduction to aged wine.

Still really quite primary (perhaps lightly tripping over into secondary), this is all about blackcurrants, blueberries and blackcurrant leaf, with quite a good level of concentration and depth of flavour. The tannins are to a large extent resolved, but they are still noticeable. Fabulous dinner companion for roasted leg of lamb with a decent level of acidity.
Despite the advice from the Wine Society to the contrary, in my experience of Madiran this should comfortably last for years, and develop quite nicely. Certainly a Domaine worthy of further exploration if this (very high) QPR is anything to go by.

Delicious, almost Musar-like. The tannins are quite heavy to begin with but these soften slowly. Very heady nose with some lovely soicy cherry notes. Very good value.

Decanted for about 2 hours. Wonderful rich aromas of truffle and blackberry with a slightly meaty note too. The palate is both smooth and interesting with clear black fruit and spice but nothing that attacks the senses too much. There are also notes of apple and tobacco. Great wine.

Very good wine for supermarket prices, starting to head into tertiary territory, but no rush, this is Madiran after all.
(As a side note, it's a pity that much else of the Chateau's output is sadly lacking the character of this particular cuvee).
