  • Getting into its stride now - some funk still but cherry and orange. Real zip and depth though relatively light in profile, not lacking in depth
    Lovely

  • Gosh, this is good. A lovely expression. Full of bounciness, huge nose and equal depth in the gullet. 12.82% alc. Wish I had another five 12 packs. Superb and will go higher. Drank in Zalto Uni. Cherry depth but still aloft with high fruit. Lush.

  • The wine is almost vile in it’s upfront boisterous funky nose. I like em a little funky but yeesh!

  • There is no other pinot out there funkier on the nose than a pinot from Bien Nacido vineyard. Unique. Funky. Marshmallow-y warm jello texture. Dry and salty characteristic of 2014 in the southern half of CA.

  • Light, delicate, and feminine without compromising any depth or strength. Very lovely Pinot with strawberry and a marine-like salinity.

  • First wine from Chanin. Always loved Gavins wines from Lutum and this was right in line! Light fruit made for a very drinkable wine from the moment the bottle was open. Nice easy finish that made you want more. Sorry to not have any more 2014 of this one but looking forward to trying newer vintages.

  • Prior bottle was five and a half months ago and my notes were consistent. Opened at cellar temperature, which was a bit cold, but as it warmed, it showed beautifully, fully recapturing my prior impressions. Same nose of black cherry and raspberry, coupled with earth, minerals and acidity. Medium bodied with all black cherry upfront and still some bright, pretty liveliness. Mid-body shows very good density and adds black raspberry and plum. Some high toned red cherry notes come in on the far backside along with blackberry and tart black cherry. Transition to the finish has improved as the acidity and fruit have come together a little more, providing better integration with the acidity, light spices, minerals and earth on the finish.

This wine has the overall density as well as the proper fruit/structure balance to continue to improve. More impressed now with this wine than I was previously as it really feels like there still more to be revealed here. Opening now, I would give it at least an hour, preferably two and a bit above cellar temperature. When initially opened and on the cooler side, the acidity can mask the complexity in the middle and leave the finishing transition feeling less integrated. As I expect this should continue to improve over the next two years, I will be looking for more.

  • Spice and dark fruit with balancing acid and light-medium tannin. This is southern California Pinot?? Others have said Vosne-like and Burgundian- I would agree. Absolutely excellent with dinner and a good example of why Gavin Chanin’s wines hold a place in our Burg-heavy cellar.

  • Prior bottle was only four months ago, but as that bottle didn't show quite as well as I'd anticipated, I decided to open another tonight. Glad that I did as tonight's bottle recaptured some of earlier impressions and made it more likely that my immediately prior bottle's poor showing was simply slightly negative bottle variation. Black cherry, earthy black raspberry and mineral notes on the nose. Medium bodied with decidedly black cherry upfront with only hints of red fruit coming in through the middle. Mid-body has better depth and better purity than my bottle form April 2019. Adds black raspberry and plum and then blackberry and tart black cherry towards the back. Finishes cleanly with mineral notes, light spices, a hint of vanilla and enough tannin for structure and a nice contrast. The biggest positive differences with this bottle were acidity and tannins still playing a solid supporting role and the fruit showing as blackfruit, rather than redfruit dominant. Should continue to hold up, based on my experiences with this bottle and I'll open my next bottle in Q1 2020.

  • The most “Burgundian” Pinot Noir from our lineup of Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy was the 2014 Chanin Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard. Vosne Romanee-esque with lifted bouquet of mild whole cluster, sweet red cherry, rose petal and well-integrated spices. Not to mention the beautiful label which Gavin Chanin painted himself! Sweet and fragrant with fair village weight. US Pinot? Sonoma? 2015? (87/100)

  • Nose: plums, cherry/prune jam
Palate: Black cherry, plums, stems present but not an obstruction with medium + acidity and medium + finish

This was enjoyable tonight. However i think this has hit its peak and begun to fade. Still has plenty of material to age but its moving on from its primary profile window. Just depends what you like or in the mood for. Enjoy!

  • Previously tasted about 22 months ago, this was my first from bottle. Nose remains a mix of black cherry and lighter, more youthful strawberry along with and earth and mineral component. Medium bodied and seems to have softened and rounded with time, showing mostly redfruit now. Red cherry initially, red raspberry through the middle and lightly tart red cherry on the backside. There's still some acidity/brightness left, but overall, this wine felt a bit more advanced than I was expecting: more rounded, less structured and a touch less complex. Considering how this wine typically ages, there might be some bottle variation here or even a cork issue. I plan to try another bottle (probably in June 2019) and confirm.

  • This is just downright delicious. Light in colour and nose but is soft and sweet raspberry with a real acidic bite at the end.
A precise 12.83 % alcohol is a real positive and would be a lovely summer drink maybe with a BBQ.
    Fun , good and lovely.

  • Quite pale in colour. Soft fruit, strawberry and cream on the nose, quite sweet, a bit like ice-cream. On the palate again soft fruit, soft tannins, not overly fresh, quite sweet, slightly spicy, decent length. Drink or keep. 89-91

  • A very pretty and intriguing mix of strawberry and black cherry on the nose. Perhaps slightly over medium bodied (12.82% ABV) with both more fruit and more structure than the other Chanin pinots tasted. A mix of red and black cherry upfront with raspberry coming in towards the middle, providing depth. The overall trend felt like a move from the redfruit end the blackfruit end of the spectrum as blackberry and tart black cherry comes in towards the finish. Minerals and acidity provide for good finishing length. Shows excellent bright fruit right now, but with some additional cellar time, should show more complexity and integration. Worth holding at least 6-12 months and show have many years after that based on prior vintages.
