reddish purple; somewhat muted nose, slow to unwind, black cherry, herbs de Provence, hints of Forrest floor, licorice, caramel; dense red and black fruit; full bodied, medium acidity, 14.3% ABV; winemaker Erik Kramer’s special barrel selection, this year sourced from Mark Bradford and Grace Vineyards, aged 17 months in 75% new French oak; intended to be a full throttle Pinot crafted for the long haul but a bit disappointing at $275 and perhaps lacking the character of Domaine Serene’s top single vineyard offerings, would recommend a decant

Well, there is a lot to this, and Oregon Pinot Noir might not be my first double-blind guess. The wine features a smoky, burnt rubber element, and even pronounced pepper notes, both of which put my mind to warm vintage, internationally styled north Rhone Syrah. Sous-bois, mineral ores, and umami essences can also be found. Fascinating given its Old World charm, showing very well now, and it may improve. Drink by 2025-2028. 94-95.

A day tasting in Oregon (Willamette Valley, OR): Pour from Coravin. Black fruit driven, with spice notes and some interesting floral aromatics. Complex. Full bodied, generally well balanced, though it shows a touch of heat on the mid-palate before acid comes in and keeps it fresh. Long finish is quite nice. Really nice, but very aggressive pricing makes this a non-starter for me. Missing some sense of place, as Oregon would not be my first guess here.

High class Pinot Noir with a bit of bottle age. Mushroomsy, earthy, on the nose. Dark cherry on the palate. Long finish.
