Medium cherry red, tawny / clearing rim. Stylish, oaky nose with liquorice and cinnamon aromas. Palate is elegant, well balanced mix of red cherry, damson fruit with green leaf and green tomato elements. Fully mature, stylish acidity and light tannins add to the high quality.

First bottle of 6 acquired from a private collector recently. It has been kept in a damp cool cellar and is in perfect condition. The rear label is slightly damaged. Colour is dark garnet and not clear. On the nose it blew me away and still quite fresh, herbaceous, chocolate, jammy and something savoury. The palate is truly amazing. Lovely tannins balanced by good acidity. Palate is savoury and more mature than on the nose. Very elegant. Beautiful.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (67%), Syrah (14%), Malbec (7%), Merlot (6%), Cabernet Franc (1,8%), Tannat (1,7%), Pinot Noir (1,5%) and the remaining 1% rounded out by a blend of Barbera, Dolcetto and Nebbiolo from Italy. Fermented and macerated for 20 days in stainless steel tanks, aged for 12-15 months in oak barrels ranging from new to 7 years old. 13% alcohol, 5,7 g/l acidity and pH 3,6. Total production 68,000 bottles, 1,000 magnums and 56 larger-format bottles. Decanted for 3,5 hours, tasted in a Mas de Daumas Gassac 2017-1989 vertical.
Evolved, quite deep and moderately translucent dark red color with a tertiary rusted iron hue. Big, ripe and dark-toned nose with very complex aromas of licorice, wizened plums, ripe blackcurrants, dried dark berries and raisiny tones, some herbaceous leafy tones, light gamey notes, a little bit of sweet smoke, a hint of dried flowers and a lifted touch of ethery VA. Lots of everything here. The wine is rich, savory and textural on the palate with a full body and dry flavors of crunchy cranberries, meaty umami, some blood, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light brambly notes of black raspberries, a juicy hint of fresh dark plums and a touch of roasted game. The structure relies as much on the high acidity as it does on the firm and still moderately grippy medium tannins. The finish is long, tertiary and somewhat grippy with long, layered flavors of sour cherry bitterness, crunchy cranberries, some gamey meat, a little bit of tart red plums, a little bit of graphite, oxidative hints of soy sauce and beef jerky and a touch of sweet, pruney fruit.
A beautiful and remarkably powerful vintage of Mas de Daumas Gassac that - despite its age - feels bigger and more concentrated than any of the vintages from the 1990's. I wonder if this vintage is an outlier, or if the MdDG wines were made in a bolder style back in the 1980's? One person in the tasting said that when they had a MdDG vertical in the 1990's, the wines from the 80's came across as more powerful and concentrated whereas the 90's wines seemed more delicate and refined in style, but it was too early to assess due to the young age of the wines. However, this 1989 vintage would corroborate to his theory. All in all, this was a very impressive, textural and muscular effort that is now at its peak. Drink or keep; I imagine the wine will keep good for many more years, but I doubt it will evolve much or at all from here, so further cellaring is not necessary. Very highly recommended.

A bit of bottle stink at first, and the audible release of gas from the bottle when the cork came out had me concerned that this might not be quite right. But it developed beautifully in the decanter, with plenty of ripe cassis, tending initially towards the fruit pastille end of things but then resolving into an airy, violets and blackcurrant impression of sweetness. Smooth and satisfying on the palate, with just a hint of soft tannins; gently enlivening acidity. Hard to pick a favourite between this, with its richer, mellower mouthfeel, and the higher toned, more aromatically complex, but slightly shriller 1988 . 13% ABV.

Incredible deep dark ruby. Seemed corked on opening (with rubbish crumbly cork). Nasty taste, little on nose, dank. Thought I might as well try the cling film recovery. Bad idea! Used a PVC cling film (didn't read the label) and this resulted many hours later in a revolting plasticky mess - flavour of old plastic mugs and plasticiser. But amazing depth of wine behind this.

This wine was "forgotten" on a wine list in a Sylt Restaurant (last bottle). Obviously it was kept well, filling was high shoulder. The Sommelier tried hard to get the cork out, which broke into many pieces. But surprisingly the wine was in excellent shape! Deep coulor, no brwon notes on the margin yet. Nose of blackberries, leather, mouthfilling and still a Little tannic (I like it), opened up during the evening, well balanced, and a very long finish. This wine still has another ten years, great stuff!

Carmine red; slight tinge of brick at the rim. Sweet fruit, cedar, leather, pencil shavings, some "dusty" tannins. Nice, beguiling complexity on the nose. Medium weight and length on the palate. Wine is ot overpowering but has definitively a good presence. Very satisfying. Tannin has held it nicely together. I am definitively a fan of those older Daumas Gassacs.

Amazing dark ruby colour still. Nose of dried and sun baked garrigue. Yesterday, 10 hours after decanting, it was a bit harsh, tannic and high acidity though still with some dark fruits, red fruits and interest. Amazingly, a further 24 hours on, open 34 Hours, it has softened, the fruits are much more present and the tannins have softened. Acidity remains high though. Leathery, herby, dusty too. Certainly interesting!

very youthful color: deep dark red, turning to carmine at the the edge. Dusty nose, pencil shavings, cedar and smells reminiscent of the evening of a hot summer day . On palate first round, smooth, yet complex, then the tannin kicks in. Good wine, well balanced. Will last some more if the bottles are well cellared. I've had many bottles of different vintages of this wine. It seems that they all are best after 10+ years of age.

Showing barely any development despite 20+ years of age, this is packed with tarry black fruit on a medium weight frame with decent acidity and copious grainy tannin, but there's very little in the way of flavour complexity yet.

Still deep in color and tannic. Tangy fruit, though, and terrific follow through. Leather, lemon zest, sour cherry, Assam black tea, bitter chocolate, hints of vanilla bean (from barrique?), smoked meat and sarsaparilla. This is from the Languedoc? It's really terrific and needs another decade or two in the cellar!

Still an amazing deep dark ruby, touches of brick at edges only. Nose of dusty dark berries and something like spring flowers. Mainly black berries but also something hotter, dried fruits. Almost a hint of wines like old Ch Musar even. Herbs too and meaty, maybe cold roast beef. Still a real bite of tannins. Maybe they will fade back eventually. Intersting wine, still got places to go and to develop further.

Wow. Super wine. Still a vibrant purple colour. Classic Left Bank Bordeaux nose of blackcurrant and cedarwood, but with some Southern French warmth and garden herbs (thyme, oregamo, margoram). Open for business on the palate. Mouth coating with lots of sweet fruit but yet classically structured. The tannins remain quite fearsome, but this is a magnificent wine.

Almost 20 years later, the color of this wine is simply as dark as a 5 year old cab ! Only a very very light brownish rim is discernable...impressive. The nose is very complex with tons of aromas coming ouf of it with blueberry, leather, tobacco, hint of smoke and vanilla. It reminded me of a Pauillac. Medium bodied, still a lot of tannins and great acidity it drinks well after a good 3 hours of decanting. Very balanced and elegant, tons of black fruits, cedar, leather and pepper. Long, long finish. You can revisit this bottle in 10 years....

fine dark brick red, slow evolvement in color; double decanted to help the nose expand; some tannins remaining but more round than the 1988; full bodied cabernet aroma with some mediterranean impressions; more pleasing than, again, 1988. fully mature but enough "energy" for at least 5 more years. very good; should be decanted because of the sediment and to help the wine breathe for at least 1 hour in advance; to be drunk at around 16 degr. celsius.

A nose of earthiness and mushroom notes with possible background raspberry aroma. This wine tasted smooth and rich with redcurrant notes providing pleasant acidity.

even better than on previous occasions;
very dark in color still. medium bodied, and a very fine and attractive nose, mature leather, some fruit, cigar box, lead pencil; excellent on the palate as well, all things coming very good together.needs decanting, lots of sediment. will last for a longer period still, a very well balanced wine. outstanding!

Monthly Tasting Group LTB 2009-05; Mas de Daumas: Vertical of 12 vintages (by DJ): A little darker than the 1990. Beautiful and complex bouquet; mature, smoky, little barnyard, herbs. Beautiful juice with chocolate, cigar, cassis. The tannin is a bit drying but fits beautifully in the wine as a whole. Very well balanced wine. Ready now but still enough power for the future.

Classical and beautiful bouquet. Complex. The wine is full bodied and soft. Cassis, good oak and bitterness. Long aftertaste. Perfectly developed, but still so much power for the future. Beautiful wine.

Wow.

You can revisit this bottle in 10 years....

fine dark brick red, slow evolvement in color; double decanted to help the nose expand; some tannins remaining but more round than the 1988; full bodied cabernet aroma with some mediterranean impressions; more pleasing than, again, 1988. fully mature but enough "energy" for at least 5 more years. very good; should be decanted because of the sediment and to help the wine breathe for at least 1 hour in advance; to be drunk at around 16 degr. celsius.

Southern Nights #1 (@ PVa): Dark berries, laurel, anise, soft acidity, tannin and bitterness. Pleasant sweetness as well. The wine presents itself still very youthful.

Showing age.
Mineral then fruity on the nose.
Sweet attack, still in balance, good finish, but I felt this wine was at its best and would not last much longer.

Rich fruit nose. Very pleasant mid palate, but astringent at the end. Much too tannic for me. "Sweet fruit - essence of cabernet."

Tasted at Singer & Foy survey of new Rhones. Gorgeous ruby. A little foamy. Nose is fruity, but a tad shy. A bit "green," coming as it does after the tremendous Beaucastel. Bright fruit in the mouth. Crunchy, raspberry. Good. 5-9-16-7: 87/100.
