An afternoon of Italian wines from Casa Bruno (Ora et Labora, Portland OR): This is showing a lot better than the bottle I had last year. This has really turned it on as the tones are savory and layered with plums, red cherries, raspberries, licorice, rose petals, tobacco notes, wild spices, and some savory herbs. The Medium/full bodied feel is refined and deep with tart, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins that are starting to show some resolution. This bottle is right in the zone and it can easily sail along for another decade+.

This was decanted for 4+ hours. The nose has a dark fruited quality that shows off a savory edge to the tones of dark red cherries, cranberries, roasted herbs, licorice, crushed rocks, violets, and earth notes. The full bodied feel shows some warmth from the alcohol with crisp, medium+ acidity and silky, medium+ tannins. The alcohol warmth does stick out somewhat, but the structure is seamless while showing off a dark and savory side. There are a few rough edges left and it could likely benefit from another 3+ years of aging.

Very tart red fruit--cherry. plum. Did I mention, tart? A tannin hit that surprises me, a bit--more that I have previously observed in Tuscan wines. I am also getting a "cinnamon" sensation. I, occasionally, get this cinnamon thing with CA Pinot Noirs, but this is the first time that I can recall getting it with anything else. The acid makes it a refreshing wine, but this is not a particularly compelling wine.

K&L Wines of Italy Tasting (K&L Wines, Redwood City, CA): Very shy...took a bit of coaxing and patience to find red fruit, toffee and a hint of spice. Completely different on the palate. Boisterous and juicy on entry, silky texture, lively and structured straight through the lengthy finish. Still a bit young, but already approachable.

Nice scorched earth, soil, iron, ripe cherry, baked raspberry. With some swirling, fresh floral aromas, and even some faint citrus. Oiled leather, ripe red fruit, and a touch of soil on the medium-bodied palate. Solid table wine likely to drink best in its youth. Drink now thru 2024. Good, clean character with just enough lift. recommended

Took over an hour to open up. Dense, ripe, and quite concentrated. 30 second finish. Amazing Sangiovese at less than $40.
Just entering its drinking window.

Rather spare and light for a Brunello. I guess for the price I shouldn't expect a legend.
