Phil and Jane: Light gold. Fresh and attractive bouquet of orchard fruits, mineral, touch of honey. It’s dry, but has ripe, sweet fruits to the fore. Balanced and complex in the mouth, with a mouthwatering citrus tinged acid. Long finish. Drinks well for a couple of days after opening.

The comments by Philipp Biermann below are pretty spot on, to me. I would add that from a vintage with many challenges, this is a splendid example of what top producers can do. Many Rieslings from this year are a bit too big for me to consider ideal, but this wine has the minerality and acid freshness that make it unmistakably German. I really think that those who love Chablis should also look to Germany for they will get the minerality, taughtness and intellectual elements of Chablis at far better prices. The wines are, of course, very different but they do have some points in common. This drinks beautifully on opening and for the next day. Drink in your garden on a sunny day, for perfection.

Riesling Riot 2018: Vanilla, lemon and pear. Quite ripe styled but certainly has the acidity to draw it back, finishes with plenty of style and interest. More time won't hurt here.

Robert Weil Masterclass (Prince Sydney, 40 Hansard Street): ripe apple, lime, peach, floral notes. Juicier and drier than the Klosterberg, a bit harder and a bit more mineral - a more serious wine and none the worse for that. Rather nice.

Over dinner, no formal notes. Mineral, fresh and vibrant, not overly generous. Good length. 90-92?

Riesling Riot downunder (Town Hall, Sydney): Peaches, ripe apple, more of the same on the palate. Juicy acidity keeps things fresh, well balanced and pretty handy.
