A momentous wine, vying with the 1945 as my favorite Beychevelle vintage. Glorious in every way, the 1929 rockets from the glass with a wild strawberry nose, full of star anise, rose, sandalwood, and Darjeeling. Delicately fragrant yet voluminous, enveloping, and naturally sweet, this has everything that you hope properly mature Bordeaux can deliver. The '29 style is simply so enchanting, so full of appeal - a vintage for the heart as much as the head, in possession of just about everything you could ask for from old claret.
Recorked at the chateau in 1974.

Nose: Perfumed cherry compote, cigar, rose, tea, and graphite. Seductive nose that is ever changing. Palate: Soft and elegant on the palate with caramelized red currant, raspberries, caramel corn, toasted morello cherry and woody spice notes. Finish: great length still, and beautiful browned fruits, caramel and spice.
An absolutely charming wine that is a peak into how the glycerin centered structure of the 29s has ageed over the decades. Outstanding. Drank with EC below.

Avery Family Cellar Wine Dinner - The Worst Wine Dinner of my life (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC): Exquisite mostly tertiary nose, still generous amount of cassis, black cherry, plum, caramel, leather, cedar, cinnamon, clove and earth. Exceptional concentration, beautifully layered cassis and black cherry, silky, dense and chewy, bright acidity and a long cassis and caramel driven finish with a hint of cedar and leather at the end. There is something magical about the 20s Bordeaux. In general, they are much more concentrated than the 60s-80s Bordeaux. Absolute pleasure.

From a magnum, this was an absolute beauty in every sense of the word. With an intoxicating, earthy, spice, tobacco, cigar box, truffle and red berry bouquet, the wine was even better on the palate. Soft, polished and with just a bit of tart that combined with the sweet, dark, red fruits, the finish, with its freshness and spice just kept on going! This was a treat I will not forget!!!

Avery Family Cellar Inaugural Wine Dinner - Really old wines (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Intense nose displaying cassis, a hint of VA, dark caramel, cedar, madeira without much oxidation, a hint of leather, lactic, dark spices and balsamico. Excellent concentration, incredibly layered, quite dense and oily, bright acidity and a long dark fruit and balsamico driven finish. For my palate, very nice showing despite the noticeable VA.
