  • Bricking development in colour.
Mint, pepper, orange in madeira scent bursting through on the nose. A finished glass captivating with honey, flower and bright orange fruit, so up there on intensity.
Palate continues developed, there is some fresh fruit to be had, but lets say a association like honey preserved orange dominating the palate. Punishing tannins at the end, and some wood in the aftertaste.
One non wino-friend had a taste at the first glass pnp, and said it was the driest wine he had encountered, starting to asking about wood and wine. Last bottle I opened two years ago I rememered as dry dry dry. Not shure if this will hit a pleasing balance with the fruit so developed and the tannins still firing so hard.

Day 2: Notes of marcipan, almond, orange liquer, aceton, really lively scents from the rim. Continues light and developed on on the palate, tannins are more integrated and finish is softer and shorter. A much more coherent experience. Up to 91 from 88.

A clear hold, my last two bottles is firmly tucked away for the next five years or so.

  • Cheeries, red berries, some mature notes and quite high acidity. Really nice.

  • This bottle is closed up compared to the one four years ago, this needed some air for sure and even then it is not at all as expressive as it was when just released.

Roses, violet, tar as well as cherry and orange rind, maybe a little tomato leaf (nerello tell-take) This has quite persistent tannins and good acidity, and it doesn’t show almost any development into the dried fruit and flowers end. Just in a place between the youthful exuberance and more developed excellence. I am starting to see that these wines are really worth drinking early rather than waiting a few years.

  • Intense and structured wine, packed with strawberry fruit but also some thyme and licorice.
The tannins has balanced out nicely and it has certainly started to open up and show some lovely intensity.
It probably needs a 1-2 hour decent but overall, it seems to be ready to drink. Great wine!

  • Still tight, but very enjoyable and elegant. Palate appears medium-bodied at most, so hope this acquires a bit stuffing with more age.

  • Forgot how tight I found this a year ago. If I had remembered I would not have opened this one. But I'm glad I did. A bit tight still so decant. But then you get a really good wine. Hint of delicious strawberries, Minerals, spice, a tad mud. Some alcohole. Lingonberriesacidity that lingers on.

Didn't put any grade on my first bottle 'cause it was so tight. But this is really fantastic. 94. Sad this is my last bottle.

  • The same impressions as in my previous note. Elegant and refined with good acidity and fine grained tannins. Drinking well now, it's a little austere and closed and should open up in 3-5+ more years. Excellent!

  • Tight. Doesn't show anything at the beginning. Popped this one way too early. My last bottle will rest for many years more. No grade.

  • This is a "good wine". You'll never meet a person who dislikes it. At the same time, you'd probably never meet one who longs.

Strawberry in the nostril, almos sweet on the tongue. I'll save the other bottle a few years!

  • From low yielding 50 - 70 year old Nerello Mascalese (98%) and Nerello Cappuccio (2%) vines, high up on Mount Etna (850 - 900 metres above sea level). Northern exposure and a volcanic soil (sand, pumice and volcanic ash). Often - as here - it is the most elegant, intense and austere of the Terre Nere Rossos, and a favourite in the line-up for me. Drunk over three evenings, during which it barely changed. Light, bright ruby, moving to garnet colour around the rim. An attractive, fine, chalky and perfumed bouquet. Fresh raspberries, blackberries and tart cherries. A touch of tar, rocky minerals and rose perfumes. In the mouth, the first impression is of refreshing, persistent acidity, the fruit seeming relatively refined, elegant and crystalline. Sleek and satiny with slatey minerals. A melange of red and black fruit, particularly cranberries, wild blackberries and those tart cherries, with sage and other dried herbs. Precise and focussed. Fine grained but firm tannins. Serious structure. A little closed. Better in 5+ years. An excellent vintage!

  • The bouquet displayed a pretty mix of mineral-tinged strawberry, hints of smoke, dusty, dried red florals, and a zest of orange. On the palate, soft, plush textures flooded the senses with a mix of wild strawberry, tart cherry, and drenching minerality, as brisk acids maintained freshness throughout, even as youthful tannins mounted toward the finale. The finish was long, dry, structured--youthful, showing tart wild berry fruit, hints of plum, wild herbs and spice with a resonating buzz of acid and tannin lingering throughout. The '16 Guardiola is like a well-muscled ballerina.

  • Served in a Riedel Bordeaux glass. Root / 1029 hPa.

Clear, garnet red moving to a bricked watery rim. Nose very much carries the character of a cool vintage nebbiolo - some roses and violets, tar, orange peel. Lightly smokey. Rosemary and a hint of clove. Rather unyielding but seductive and delicate at the same time, the nose already hints at a serious, structured wine underneath. After an hour open, the nose becomes incredibly heady and floral with roses, lilac, and lavender. The initial palate is underripe with dark cherries, savory rosemary and thyme, and cassis. Medium plus acid, the tannic structure of this wine really flexes its muscle midpalate. Dry, robust, and bold, but with a certain weightless quality that lends some elegance. Smokey minerality comes out with some air, almost with a gravel like quality. The finish is long with dried herbs, silky yet assertive tannins, and a touch of mandarin orange.

I would love to try one of these wines with 5+ and 10+ years on it, as there is certainly all of the stuffing for a long life here.

  • Very badly corked

  • Light crimson. Associate with nebbiolo. Lovely perfume - orange and cloves. Some roses. Drying tannins and good acid join the mineral feel. Very cool climate-ish. Elegant and lovely drinkability. No heft and nothing over extracted. Nice

  • Really up my alley - like a cool climate nebbiolo, floral with violet and roses, a little tar, a lot of red fruit - red currant, strawberry, orange. Tannins are fine and but persistent, but not mouthfilling like for nebbiolo. Acidity is good and gives the wine just the right lift. Sure it is young, but for me thoroughly enjoyable.

  • Tenuta delle Terre Nere (CAVE SA, Switzerland): Rather more discreet on the nose with a smoky character, less exhuberantly fruity but so much more elegant. Some menthol too.
Plenty of matter in this wine, concentrated and you get notes of elevage. Good wine, the tannins are not resolved just yet (slight astringency).

  • Sourced from the Guardiola Cru, which sits at the highest elevation, ranging from 800 to almost 1,000 meters and consists of grey/black volcanic sand, basaltic pebbles, a touch of ash. This unique terroir gives the wine a distinct character, which takes center stage. As this begins to unwind it releases pretty aromas of wild red berries, cherries and cassis, which are laced with smoke, fresh roses and eucalyptus notes that all take shape beautifully. On the palate this shows wonderful elegance and refinement, with fine, silky tannins and gorgeous acidity. Everything comes together seamlessly on the finish, which displays wonderful vibrancy and length. Overall, this is a brilliant wine which certianly has a remaekable future ahead. 98% Nerello Mascalese and 2% Nerello Cappuccio, from between 50 and 70 years old.

  • The bouquet was gorgeous with a display of floral and herbal infused black cherry, hints of spiced orange peel and minerals. On the palate, I found velvety textures with wonderful lift as tart cherry and savory herbs washed across the senses, becoming almost weightless, giving way to zesty acids and the onset of fine tannin. The finish was long, showing fresh red fruits, minerals, inner floral tones and a complex web of tannin, which was nearly enveloped by the Guardiola’s beautifully pure and very feminine fruit.
