2016 Niepoort Poeirinho

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 92.4 points

  • 2016, 100% Baga grape from their Quinta de Baixo vineyards. 11.5% abv. Very delicate cherries with a tannic backbone. Shy at first, then opens up with air but still retains that restrained fruit profile. Best comparison would be old world Pinot Noir from long ago. Deceivingly long finish just dances around for ages. No experience with this wine previously, but would appear to need more time to really strut its stuff. 92+ points.

NOSE: savory; red-fruited; tight; roasted fennel bulb; not funky or syrupy.

BODY: slightly mahogany shade to the otherwise garnet color; color is of medium depth; medium-light bodied.

TASTE: light purple fruits, with medium concentration; light leather; medium-light tannins; medium to medium+ acidity; juicy mid-palate, with medicinal cherry; 11.5% alc. is hidden; savory, and leans more rustic than fruity; easy drinking; great Pinot Noir substitute, from a structural perspective. Last little sip on Day 4 was delicious, by the way. Drink or Hold.

  • Very interesting nose right from pnp. Leather galore with red fruits hiding behind it. After 3 h of air it settles down and very reminiscent of a great Pinot. Strawberry, cherry and old leather with the finest tannins.

  • (Barrel sample) Nice fruity with a pleasant yeasty aspect. Brambles. Very direct and powerful. Chewy fruit leathers. Very touchy-feely on the palate. Leather and soil on the dry down with beautiful subtlely. Lovely stuff.
