Pulled on a whim for a 2014 themed tasting. This was fine, with usual varietal character, but I find it a bit lacking in personality. Red fruit, very small hint of rose water. Minimal VA, drying tannins round it out. Day 2 was not significantly different.

excellent wine. tasted side by side with the PdB standard bottling and both were awesome. This one is 2x price though so QPR on the std. bottle is much higher. The reservas are a bit more nuanced but tough to justify the price.

Swedish xmas spice on nose (think glögg, cinnamon, ginger, kryddnejlika), very pronounced spice and orange. Not bad at all - tending towards a sniffer-wine. On the palate this is not long, but quite velvety. Smooth operator! Fully open if i am not mistaken, and not sure of future potential either. Drink. Changing my drinking window to <2027.
2hrs in: come to think of it, not quite that smooth - some bitterness and etoh. But also, this feels low on acid. Hmm.

Brief notes on wines at Noble Rot with Thierry, Mark and the two Andrews (Wellington, NZ): Dark ruby, young-looking. An expressive, fruit-forward bouquet. Mainly red cherries, raspberries and some plums, red rose perfume, liquorice and a touch of tar. Not as expressive on palate. Initially seeming leaner, then, after some time in the glass, it filled in, showing sufficient depth and concentration. Sour red cherry, savoury and earthy nuance, with freshly cut herbs. Bright, persistent acids. Tannins only a little grippy, but relatively well behaved. Quite open and approachable this early but still with some austerity and strictness of the tannins on the moderately long finish. Ideally hold until 2025+.

Medium/Light Body. Cherry but with more heft and full mouth taste than some nebbiolos. Drinking well now, but enough tannins and bright acid to continue to develop.

Vinetasters: 2013 Produttori horizontal et al. (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Somewhat woodsy nose, with a little note of sous bois. A mix of red and black fruit; nowhere as confected as the previous wine (the 2011 Rio Sordo). Still, cherries predominate, with some liqueur-like sweetness. Far less tannin than the 2011; a much silkier texture overall.

The wine is clear, with medium garnet color, and watery rims. On the noes the wine is clean, with medium plus aromas of plums, mushrooms, wet floor, cocked vegetables, oak spices, olives. On the palate the wine is dry, with medium plus acidity, medium plus soft and integral tannins, medium alcohol, medium body, medium plus flavors of ripe cherries, mushrooms, mineral notes, gravel, dirt. The wine is of a very good quality, due to its length and complexity. It is pronounce and enjoyable now, but can benefit from further aging.

The same bottle accessed by Coravin in March, tasted over two days.
The earthy, red-loam side of Barbaresco, reminiscent of judiciously oaked Campania Aglianico. Red fruited, burly, and mostly unyielding, yet it retains intriguing freshness and delineation. It requires no less that five to seven years to unwind.
Otherwise, consistent with previous note, even if more shut down.
An underappreciated vintage. Likely to improve. 94-95.

Forsiktig start, røde sursøte bær,litt kaffe. Stram, ung og faste tanniner. Åpner seg i time to og viser klare røde bæraroma av kirsebær og modne bringebær. Flott kompani til sopprisotto.

Coravin pour. Tasted alongside the same producer's and vintage's AOC Barbaresco.
Some bottle funk initially, and also quite meaty, particularly for Barbaresco. If blind, I would have called it Barolo. With air, the funk blew off, and while the meatiness remained, the wine added effusive prettiness of flowers, red berries, rose petals, and hints of tar.
A friggin' powerhouse! Just massive! Medium plus to high acid and medium plus tannin grace the palate from the attack through a very long and layered finish. The tanninphobic should not touch this for 12 to 15 years. Unlike some Barolo and Barbaresco offerings, where the tannins do not show until the wine has breathed, here they come out to play from the outset. Just a baby. Likely to peak after 2044. Based on this experience, a fuller and more complete wine than the same producer's 2011 Rio Sordo. 95-96...97?
P.S. The scores here puzzle me.

Splash decanted for several hours. On the nose tea, and violet. On the palate sweet red fruit on entry, cherry, strawberry, more crystalline and juicy mid palate. Slightly bitter tar and moderately drying tannins on the long finish. Still young, drink with decant. The fruit was a bit muted, overall good, not great.

Produttori Rio Sordo 2014. Nose was decent nebiollo with berry/cherries, not particularlyremarkable/powerful. Palate is a little thin-- acidic and fruit is lacking. Lot of tannin too. Fruit lacks intensity and not a great acid/tannin balance. Overall decent, but not stellar. 88-89/100

Small sample red fruited and maybe a bit simple fror a reserva. But the tannins were tame and rather easy to drink.
