  • Wow, this is totally fantastic and just barely entering maturity. Screaming aromatics, rose petal, hints of lychee, orange marmalade, definitely some botrytis elements. Spicy, spicy, spicy, clove, screaming white pepper, honey, and tangerine. This is clearly VT, rich, deep, and powerful, but it is not a dessert wine.

  • Almost ten years after my first note!

    Not only is this one no longer oppressively sweet dominated, it's got a decent nose, a great mouth, and a very good length. Nice bitter GW notes here. Good white fruit, some bitter spice notes.

    Initial notes- WOW. What a nice long finish, what a nice color, what a nice smell! how nicely it opens up. This one is built to last long. It has what it takes to be at its prime at 15, 20, and 25 years.

    More detailed notes-
    This is the second '02 zind this year (first was '02 Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl VT)

    We would certainly say that the Gewurz is more on the sweeter side than the Pinot Gris. But they are both on the dry (more dry) side that we really like. Color- bright gold, (ref points: brighter than the tempe not as gold as the Gris). Great nose. Orange and honey.
    On the taste... mmm... WOW. sweet, yet light enough not to make you too sleepy while drinking... Medium to long finish (longer than the pinot gris, shorter than the Tempe).
    While the Pinot Gris could easily be my main dish/all night long wine, this one would be more of a second or a dessert wine. Both are real good examples of the Zind-Humbrecht. I am VERY curious with regards to the way this one would develop. It will age, for certain. It will age well. Maybe I should get another one for the next five years?

    Edited (Jan-15-2014)---> indeed, we got another one few days ago to be kept for a while. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

  • It’s probably a toss between the Rangen and the Goldert as to my favorite ZH Gewürztraminer vineyard. The former being a text book example of the individual expression of site, the latter showcasing the grape. This 02 Goldert VT was a good example to this effect, as even though it carried 50% botrytised fruit, this screamed Gewürztraminer in unapologetic fashion. For a ZH VT, this was actually a tad on the dry side, though still sporting a ton of ripe, exotic fruit, but completely balanced by a still youthful tannic structure, a smoky mineral quality, sneaky acidity, and of course, a massive finish. First of three, I’d comfortably age the other two bottles up to 20 years. Superb.

  • Not as sweet as I thought it would have been...but fantastic in quality. Like dirnking an ultra rich and layered big daddy gewurtz. Lost of passion fruit and mango, with a touch of smoke and enough acidity to keep it going. Lovely oily texture to this also. This wine would be better off as a main course wine than a dessert wine. Try with some roast pork, pork sausages, or some asian noodle dishes and wonton soups, etc. 3 1/2 stars out of 5.

  • 2002 Zind Humbrecht wines; 1/1/2006-12/31/2006: Closed, but impressive. VT sweet that hides the underlying tastes, and to some extent, the aroma, of the fruit. Shows great promise, but difficult to truly judge in this closed phase, with muddled fruit and mineral tastes. Drink this one after all of the other 2002 ZH Gewurtztraminer bottles.
