  • Nice Rosso, last bottle of 6, some bottle variation, some gunk in most of the bottles, good QPR at the 21€ paid but not rebuying more for now

  • This was good, but seemed to me to perhaps be in a bit of a difficult phase where the tannins were quite strict and vertical in feel. If more bottle age can sort that out this can be really lovely, because there is a very fresh fruit of cherries, strawberries, violet, licorice, herbs and orange zest.

  • This wine opened with a clear cherry red colour and an attractive nose of mixed red and dark cherries, autumn herbs, red orange zest and fresh tobacco. The palate reflects those zesty fruit characters with an emphasis on the dark cherry characters and the savoury aspects of the finish. The texture remains quite rich and persistent yet this bottle seems a little more straightfoward than others. Is this indicative of the future or just a different bottle ? Its still a lovely rendition of the charms of Sangiovese.

  • Sometimes being a wine un-professional has its advantages. Like if I suffer suddenly from word depletion or maybe better taster's block I don't have to post a note at all.

When I find myself encountering headwinds like this, I usually need a special experience to shake me out of the doldrums. And here it is.

Right on the heels of several notes extolling the 2015 Montalcino vintage, I encounter this '16 Rosso. It's superb. On the strength of this wine, and several '16 Barbarescos I've already opened too early, I am prepared to proclaim 2016 the greatest Italian vintage since Nero tried to douse the flames with LXVIII Falerno.

Bright medium ruby color. Knockout nose of pure ripe sour cherries dusted with cocoa powder and a slight yeasty/sourdough note. Beautiful on the palate, with exceptional depth of fruit and balance for an ordinary Rosso. I get an added flavor impression of raspberry jam without the sugar. In this vintage, it easily outclasses many Brunellos I've had over the years. Finishes with a tart impression on the back of the tongue and gentle but persistent tannins. It's obviously young but my wife served her to-die-for osso buco and nothing in the cellar is sacred when that happens. Drinking window as it often does here on celllartracker appears to kneecap the upside. Good for another 10 in my un-professional opinion.

  • If this serves as a preview of the 2016 vintage in Tuscany, then good things lie ahead. Light in color, this a lovely, restrained, lifted, and floral style of Sangiovese. Right up my alley. For ~$20, this is a no-brainer. There is enough stuffing in this to age a few years, but it's so lip-smacking tasty right now.
