  • Opened the Clone 4 and Clone 7 at the same time to compare. Clone 4 is slightly more subdued on the nose than Clone 7, but more complex. Black cherry, red cherry, plum, herbs, wet earth, mushroomy loam, smoke, and a little tobacco. Clone 7 has classic ripe California cab aromas. Cassis, blackberry, plum jam, strawberry, red cherry, menthol, smoke, earth, herbs, and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, Clone 7 is all sweet rich blackberry, cassis, plum, red cherry, earth, herbs, and a touch of saline. Nice acidity, grippy, slightly powdery tannins, long finish. Full body. Needs a few more years for the tannins to resolve, but it's still very drinkable and delicious right now. Clone 4 is sweet red fruit, ripe red cherries, plums, blackberry jam, earth, graphite, tobacco, and herbs on the palate. Nice acidity, slightly drying tannins, med-long finish. Full bodied, delicious. Maybe a touch astringent at this point, could use a few more years, but drinkable and pleasurable right now. Clone 4 - 91pts, Clone 7 - 92pts.
