Saturday hangout (socially distanced) (Chicago, IL): A solid bottle of Burgundy, but not exactly the most inspiring. The nose comes off initially a little woodsy and there's a lot of spice as well. On the palate, there's quite a bit of density and weight, as well as a touch of oak and some black fruit. A touch of Sharpie as well. This is a correct wine, but it lacks any excitement; pretty consistent for the Nicolas Potel wines, truth be told.

Ruby. At first, quite a bit of resiny wood on the nose, but this backed off to reveal more modulated green tones and licorice. Light to medium weight, proper Volnay. Crisp black more than dark red fruit, acidity veering toward the cranberry end of the spectrum, strong remaining tannins, and a nice lashing of soil. Thankfully, less of a wood impression on the palate than the initial sniff suggests. This is coming along very nicely yet is still a good 5 years away from maturity. Typical 2005 aging curve, it seems.

Bright ruby red fruit, little sign of age possibly at the beginning of it’s drinking window. Tart raspberries, mineral, spice, long elegant finish. Not extremely complex but quite excellent.

score is for the last half glass on night four... like so many '05's this wine was awkward / shut down for three nights straight, it had some protruding oak, the fruit wasn't very apparent, notwithstanding that there was some clear density here it wasn't coming out of the cave, on night four my first sip tasted like bright raspberries and I sensed that this wine will be better in 10, 12, fifteen years... put your '05's at the bottom of the stack!

this wine was too young, nice with great brightness and acidity on night one, good red oriented fruit, you could sense the grapey fruit in the background, on night two you could sense the rounding and fruit coming forward but clearly this is mostly hiding... I will take my second bottle to offsite as I think this will sing (93 pts?) in ten years... really enjoyed it with my opah dinner on night two, but sooooo much more to give I think in the future

Quite youthful red ruby. Flamboyant aromas of Asian spice, brown sugar, and fresh raspberries. Deep rich layered tannic entry with quite broad shouldered flavors(especially for Volnay) with spicy black cherry cola and a very long finish. Still completely unevolved. Like a 2-3 year old wine. Nice energy but this is still too young. Wait at least 3 more years. It is super tasty now, but lacking the haunting Volnay notes I expected.

Opened by Julie on Christmas Eve, check on Christmas day. On Christmas Day, this was very much as one would expect for one of the better 2005 Burgundies. Completely primary, but possessed of a dense, deep palate with a core of sweet fruit framed by substantial tannins. This is not showing much now, so wait at least 5 years on this one. But the potential is there--overall good balance and materials.

Chablis and Red Côte de Beaune Dinner (Portofino - Chicago IL): Enjoyable, but not quite showing the intensity of this great vintage.

Hard as nails, lots of big fruit, some spice, not classically Volnay to me. But just oo young?

Medium body Volnay. A bit closed right now. Medium finish.
