This wine was of course past prime, but still had memories of that Rosenblum greatness of old! It was definitely on the downhill slide, but retained a good bit of delicious fruit. Even at 15.6% ABV, the years had mellowed it wonderfully. Some good memories in this bottle.

Stood up to Smoque BBQ Brisket. Super extracted and rich. It bears some resemblance to Rosemblum Petite Syrah. There's no finesse in this at all but its an enjoyable drinker.

Raspberry, blueberry, and tobacco. There's a little heat on the nose. This bottle is not as good as the previous. Either an off bottle or this is fading. Doesn't seem to have the fullness or depth of previous bottles.

Sweet, sirupy notes of berries, chocolate and vanilla. Warm and thick in texture with some sweet spice and a peppery bite, this is, by all accounts, a cocktail wine. Alcohol is unobtrusive; acidity is almost non existant.....nonetheless, this has its place in the world and is actually enjoyable on a cool spring evening with grilled food on the table.

Just what you would want and expect from a first rate Cali Zin. This was rich, thick and wonderful. Loads of ripe blueberries and plums, along with sweet vanilla, a little nutmeg, and finally that zesty, Zin spiciness that's true to the varietal. The alcohol here blows off with air and ultimately the wine integrates and comes into balance. Would definitely recommend.

rich, dark fruit on the palate accompanied by the zing of alcohol (15.6%) which lessened as the wine breathed. Good mouthfeel, dark color and a nose of spice & fruit; an altogether very nice Zin.

Very dark purple velvet & lots of viscosity. Lilac, blueberry syrup, white cocoa, and peppermint chalk dust in a large nose. Blackberry jam, chocolate, licorice, nice toast in the Rosenblum, nearly-over-the-top style. Approaching the end of it's prime (like me) as the acidity level seems precarious and the RS is pushing up. (5+12+16+7) = 90

If you like your zinfandel to show itself in a very fruit-forward manner, you will enjoy this wine immensely. Loads of boysenberry/blueberry, a hint of vanilla, and a touch of herbal nuance on the nose. Tooth-coating in the mouth with a candied cherry flavor and firm tannic backbonce; a little heat and pepper as well. A decent finish that evolved into raisins and stewed prunes. A bit of sediment in the bottle. I waited to enjoy this bottle with ribs and it worked very well. Drink or hold for 1-2 years.

Over the top stewed fruit soup. Port like flavors of rasins and prunes, heavy bodied California bomb. A little searing OH on the nose with concentrated extracted fruit trying to bust through. It is a hedonistic fruit snack but unbalanced and difficult to pair with anything. You actually get too much in this wine, too much hang time, alcohol, etc....

I mentioned in my last review back in June 2007 that this vintage will be better than the 03 and 04. It seems to be headed that way. The wine is developing complexity and is evolving slowly, much slower than the over the top 2004 and slower than the 2003 as well. For those lucky individuals that have this in the cellar, be patient because it is nowhere near its peak yet. Stay tuned!

Peppermint, black cherry and floral notes sit in a heavy, sweet nose. Not your typical Rosenblum fruit bomb as other say, at least not in my opinion. The Sauret is spicier and has earth notes most other Rosenblum zins don't. Blackberry, blueberry and dark chocolate are so tasty in this wine. The tannins are very playful. There's also some anise on the finish, but it's not overwhelming at all...just enough spice.

This was a pop and pour with about 15 minutes in glass before I picked up the glass again. Beautiful deep purple color. Hot nose with some blackberry hints. First taste; definitely some cherry, blackberry, vanilla and smoke. Very light chewiness, smooth tannins and despite the higher alcohol content, not too much heat in the finish. Very smooth, fruity and tasty zin. Would definitely consider purchasing again. As a matter of fact, we went and bought some for part of a gift! I would like to decant this the next time for a while and see what happens.
***UPDATE: *** Second day; decanted for 3 hours prior to opening (had vacuvin'd it the night before). Much better post-decanting. It definitely smoothed the wine out and opened it up. The dark fruits really showed some strength in the first taste and the nose cooled off a lot! Highly recommend a lengthy decant before consuming this one. I have adjusted the rating secondary to the second tasting (Pop'n'Pour=88; 3'hour'decant=90)

Popped and poured, a bit hot, with stewed/roasted overripe fruit character. Picked it up the next morning and found a different wine: Less heat, with nice cherry, blackberry and eucalyptus flavors. Finishes with slightly bitter mint and a touch of heat. I liked the day-two version of this far better than the 2004, which had too much residual sugar. This probably just needs more time to settle down. Right now, with significant air time, 87-88, but it will likely be better than that in time.

The wine is >15.5% alcohol and you can't tell it. The alcohol is very well integrated. the midpalate is packed with jammy blackberry and that brambly zin flavor. I'm rating this wine based on what it will be with 1 to 2 years in the cellar. Most Rosenblum wines greatly improve a few years after release. This wine has a pH of 3.62 which is quite acidic compared to some of the other Rosenblum zins that approach 4.0. To me this means 2 things, it will age well, but it may seem tart right now for some people. Have it with food or cellar for a while, your patience will be rewarded! I recently opened a 2003, 2004, and the 2005 in order to taste them side by side and have them with ribs from the grill. The ribs were somewhat sweet and therefore my sister and her husband preferred the 2004. My wife and I preferred the 2003 based on its smoothness and complexity. I remember the 2004 upon release and it showed very little other than sweetness and alcohol. Now the 2004 has complexity with less apparent sweetness. I had bought a case of the 2003 in January 2005 and watched it evolve in about 6 months to a fantastic wine. Based on my experience with this vineyard designate, the high acidity, and my faith in Rosenblum’s consistent barrel program, the 2005 at some point will be the best of the three.
