WineBerserkers dinner (Chicago, IL): Definitely my favourite of the three red Burgs tonight. Ripe, potent, and powerful, with a fair bit of oak, though less toasty and spicy versus the Magnien. The fruit is more exuberant and broad; this has really good palate presence, especially with the black fruit. Plenty of potential ahead.

Anne Gros normally makes elegant wines, but her 2005 wines are incredibly rich and dark, not her usual style but still very enjoyable. Tasted blind – Concentrated array of sweet mixed berries, glossy new oak, and dark and brooding Grand Cru structure. Strangely the alcohol feels slightly disjointed, ripe and muscular fruits, most likely a ripe year. 2009 / 2005? Vosne Romanee 1er / Clos Vougeot? Cathiard? (89/100)

Anne Gros owns a prime plot in Clos Vougeot (Grand Maupertui), located a stone throws away from Grands Echezeaux. Generally Anne Gros wines are elegant and gently extracted, however this 2005 Clos Vougeot is a different animal – Ripe, glossy and substantial. Tasted blind – A densely backed array of dark berries, mulberry, toasted spices and chewy tannins. Rich and ripe. Full bodied, Grand Cru weight with lots of substance. Grand Cru but not sure where (after many bottles of course!) 2005? (90/100)

TNs: Female Burgundy Winemakers Dinner (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): A very solid if unspectacular wine. It had a rather dark, savoury nose, with dark fruit and spice couched in notes of earth, meat and a touch of funk. the palate shared some of that savoury character, with notes of olive tapenade, earth and meat forming bassy backdrop for muscular, yet nicely focused flavours of black cherries earth. It was a full, powerful wine, with a good chew lent to it by firm 2005 tannins and juicy acidity as well. There was a just a hint of oxidisative browned fruits towards a long finish on the back-palate, otherwise this can together quite nicely. I would wait 5-10 years more on the bottle though. Like many 2005s, it still needs time to evolve.

Ripe cherry, black current out of the glass. In about 30mins, there is strong aroma of violet paddles. There is hints of pepper. On the palate it is more austere, with strong minerality of crushed stones. The weight on the palate is medium, wine is balance, medium-high acidity with smooth tannin. Very approachable right now.

A monument in the making. Probably infancide drinking here... Tight wound tannic powerful long... Wouldn't approach for another 10 years and wouldn't beel surprised if this goes another 40 years. On a recent domain visit to Anne Gros we drunk 1947 and 1955 clos vougeot which were showing well (47 brilliant while 55 on the decline) but goes to show for a great vintage like 2005 this can go for a long while...

Solid, but didn’t impress as it should have. Early for a 2005 Grand Cru, so judgement reserved.

Well this didn't suck. Day one or day two. And was quite youthful to boot. So if you got 'em, smoke 'em, or don't!
