From a magnum that had not been moved from the chateau since bottling, this was rocking! The smoke, tobacco, tar, truffle, earth, cigar box and wild strawberry filled perfume got you going. The silky, fresh, cherry filled finish took you the rest of the way. The perfect provenance had a lot to do with this wines stunning quality. Still, that being said, it's worth seeking out, if you're a fan of mature wines as it's not that expensive.

Domaine de Chevalier vertical - WinePages @ Ledbury (Ledbury): A 2nd bottle of this. Again, surprisingly unevolved in colour. Cleaner on the nose, with deep black and red fruit character. However if anything this seems more scalped on the palate, with the acidity prominent, and the finish is shorter than bottle 1.

Domaine de Chevalier vertical - WinePages @ Ledbury (Ledbury): Unevolved, mid ruby colour verging to garnet rim. A big argument about whether this was corked or not! Initially for me at least this just seemed to be bottle funk - unsurprising at 46 years old. The funk dissipated but there remained a touch of dirt (not TCA) somewhere on the nose and a second bottle (see below) was cleaner. Conversely, on the palate this had plenty of black and red fruit, mid + acidity and resolved tannin. GFWII - I'd have drunk a second glass.

Ian S's Dom de Chevalier offline (The Ledbury, London.): A sligut edge to the nose that blows off in time, developing a slight mintiness. Sweet fruit, rounded, long, slightly savoury edge. Complete, not profound but lovely. Really full and rounded. The other table claimed to have a better bottle but whilst I preferred the nos on their's, I thought our bottle was more rounded and richer on the palate. Stunningly good condition. ****

Domaine de Chevalier Magnum Dinner (Restaurant Taillevent, Paris): Lots of cedar on nose and palate. More acidity than tannins, decent fruit.

Vertical tasting of Domaine de Chevalier (Rouge) (Institute of Directors, London): Some suggestion of TCA at first, but this blew off, and by the end of the evening had blossomed with a lovely sweet tobacco fragrance, fresh, balanced and long
