  • This screams"California" with plush varietal character fruit, strong backbone and a good splash of oak. We opened this at the right time, too.

  • Decanted for about an hour, nice expression of ripe red fruit (cherry/raspberry) and somewhat unripe dark fruit (blackberry) as well as some spice and vanilla notes. Nice acidity, and balance with a decent finish. Not sure it justifies the cost, but overall a very enjoyable wine.

  • Really getting good now - two more bottles may not survive long under the theory that if you ask, "When should I drink this wine?" the answer is always "Now." Nose is mellow and smooth, with bramble and dark fruit notes, but no harshness at all. Same on the palate - some may call this wine unsubstantial, but I say it is the opposite of overpowering - it is full, complex and has a fairly long finish that never gets harsh. Wish I'd bought a lot more. Oh well.

  • nose was muted. was expecting bigger wine with the price point and other reviews. some fruit of berries, but not much depth and not much of a finish. had it with beef wellington. complemented the meat and pate, but was expecting bigger, bolder cab.

  • Second try of 6 we bought about a year ago. First was good but... Now I'm becoming a fan. On opening, a sip was a little harsh. Tannins obscured the fruit. After an hour of breathing - new story. Smooth but not wimpy. Lots of black fruit but the other extreme from the jammy wines that make us say "Who put the honey spoon in the wine?". Three of us had this with just bread and Boursin cheese so no good meal comparison, but I'd say for beef tenderloin or even a hearty pork roast it would be ideal. Not something I'd ask to stand up to lamb or venison. All in all, a good wine now and could evolve into a great wine over the next 2 or 3 years. As sort of a backhanded compliment, I'd say you don't need to be a wine snob to appreciate and enjoy this wine!

  • Finally!! I've had the '01, '02 and '03 and by FAR, and 03 LM Monte Rosso is the best of the 3. Lots of nice structure and acidity with plenty of up front fruit. I'm going to get a case.

  • Gallo Tasting: The others at the tasting seemed to enjoy this more then I did. I thought it was a good bottle of wine at a decent price, but didn't get overly excited about it. Pleasant nose, with fairly intense dark fruits and some toasty oak. Ripe, with a huge mouthfeel. Long finish. Nothing subtle about this wine. Worth the tariff, but doesn't feel like it came from any sense of place, which would be the goal with Single designates, I would assume. It wouldn't be to charge more and for marketing... not with Gallo in charge. 88-89
