The texture here is remarkable, setting it apart from the other DRC wines in the flight. A gorgeous wine, and the theme today seems to be the more recent DRC wines showing beautifully while the 90's bottles are often varying degrees of flawed - or more likely we are just unlucky today on the older bottles. In any case, this is a lovely wine.

During a Paulee dinner, so only brief impressions. Very youthful, I would not open this before 2028. A pleasure today but so much more to come. Aromatically not yet mature. The structure here is excellent, rich but deleniated.

Wines of the Gods (House of AC and JC): Component of DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux vertical. Dark ruby with smoked Morello cherry nose. Massive rich huckleberry palate with impressive grip and a very long finish. This speaks to the vintage and smart money went deep on these big boy 2005's of earthly delight. So balanced can be broached now but best 2032-2062.

From a restaurant list with little time in the decanter: this remained reserved and we only had hints of its potential to enjoy. The mid palette grew in depth woth air, but the nose remained timid.

Still very closed. Opened for 2 hours and then decanted. An hour after decanting had added considerable weight and structure. Enjoyable after the wait but needs much more time. Stay tuned…..

10/09/05/03/02/00/98/90 vertical. Impressive for its scale and intensity, though this is starting to show refinement and integration and more fresh than the still-compelling 2003. 2-3 points of upside from here.

La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. Backward and still structured, this has the most sheer concentration of the flight but was just hinting at its potential. I was more excited about this wine than most others today; in fact, I think this will be the best way amongst this 8 when we re-tasted them all...ten years from now. 93 points today, 96 points from 2030 forward.

At La Paulee Gala….I have not been opening 05 GCs so this was a revelation to me. I agree with the TN below that called it surprisingly open. In a sizable vertical I thought this was right there with the 1990 at the top, actually more like it’s younger brother with a similar profile. Preferred it slightly to the 10

After 2 hours decant this is surprisingly open for a 2005. floral nose, hints of tea and hoisin. Impressive, sweet mid palette and good length. I would say in early drinking window with a long life ahead.

This is a hard one to write about as I tried this at a dinner which I then had to rush home from so didn’t get that long with it. Vibrant red fruit on the nose, raspberries and cherries and then exotically spicy. Layers and layers of spice. Oak is present but it's savoury and spicy rather than vanilla and the fruit is so intense that the oak never dominates. On the palate it was not giving much away. fresh, quite firm tannin, some floral fragrance, but still feels very young and concentrated. Finish though is sublime, all those spices coming back through, camphor, cinnamon, pepper. Extremely long. I swear I could taste it the folllowing morning. First experience with DRC and I could see what all the fuss is about but this needs years before you can fully appreciate it.

Wow wine, 05 DRCs are simply mind-blowing. Exuberant, sexed up stem aromatics. Palate is far too early to broach. There's sweetness but also massive structure with chewy tannins that need 5-10 years minimum to integrate. (1532/11809)

Decanted for 2-3 hours before service. Killer perfume, plenty reserved but what it does show is beautiful savory white spice with attractive red fruit underneath. Very fresh on the palate, with the dark red fruit moving forward, coming more in to focus with the savory spice still a major part of the equation. Carries forward in to a complex, graceful finish with good length. Really blossoms with air, and fun to be on the ground floor, watching some of these 05’s blossom. A vintage that shut down so hard, no one thought they’d be ready by now, but Father Time has to set in eventually. Tough to pick between this and the 10’ much better to have both at your disposal, with the 10’ showing more attractive sweet fruit, while the 05’ blends its dark fruit with bold white spice, making the 05’ a better pair with food, and promising the longer life in the cellar.

Five winos excellent adventure , mostly in Burgundy; 6/7/2019-6/15/2019 (Beaune, France): Exquisite youthful yet complex nose, bright sweet red fruit, raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb tart, sour cherry, rose, sap, a hint of stem, a good amount of sous bois, Chinese medicine, tea, baking spices, truffle and earth. Beautifully integrated sensual palate, layers upon layers of sweet red fruit, very precise and detailed, silky and fluid, bright acidity, strong mineral and a seamless incredibly long sweet red fruit driven finish with sous bois and caramel at the end. This bottle is a bit more ready than the last October bottle. Perhaps not as complex as La Tache but it is showing magnificently. If one prefers a lot of sous bois, it can easily improve for another two decades.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Rosewood Hotel Dining Room - Washington DC): Decanted 3-4 hours before serving. Broad array of red cherry and berry aromas with baking spice. Similar flavors bring out some black cherry as well. So alluring, especially from start-to-middle, then slightly more firm towards long/ powerful finish. This way exceeded my expectations for today.

Annual Chicago winos visit - Champagne, DRC, Yquem, SQN and etc. (The Grill Room at the Rosewood DC): Explosive youthful nose displaying opulent rich red fruit, raspberry, strawberry, sap, caramel, sweet spices, a hint of sous bois, Vosne spice, tree bark and mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated red fruit, rich and dense yet silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral and a long concentrated red fruit and caramel driven finish. I doubt this will shutdown and can improve for another two decades or more. Drinking beautifully in a very youthful way.

Opened for 3 hours before drinking, dark red color, nose of red fruit and full panoply of spices and dried herbs. Everything is in the right place, perfect balance, in perfect harmony, just the right amount of fruit vs acidity. Iron fist in a velvet glove, infanticide for sure but can see the enormous potential ahead.

Slow ox for 3 hours, decanted for 1 hour. The nose was minty with wild berries, stones, flowers and spices. Throughout a three hour dinner, the wine really opened up. The ripeness of 05 vintage slowly emerged with a very well balanced sweetness coming around towards the middle of the dinner. The finish was long and round with lush on the palate. This one is really the standard of a perfect burgundy and a masculine DRC. It is too young today, but it will be entering its drinking window in 10 years. By that time, I would imagine its a 97-98.

An amazing nose rises from the glass. So sexy and so much the essence of Grand Cru Vosne. Had this blind, and no question about this coming from DRC. Lovely scent of fine cherries, meat stock, dust, stems, herbs, minerals, crushed stones, Vosne spices, red flowers, roses and perfume. Amazing! The palate was no less amazing than the nose. Lovely clean tart berries, cherries, sweeter wild strawberries, spicy stems, amazing minerallity and great acidity. Incredible length and balance! Power and finesse in a perfect combo. Stayed on the tongue for 1,5 minutes +. I can almost still taste it. Very, very good, and actually open for business now. You can’t beat this. Sex in a bottle. My wine of the night. (96+ – 98)

Some at the table thought this showed a bit of bret but I have never seen bret in a DRC and thought it was meaty reduction that would breathe up and it did. Kit was however completely shut down and surly. Dark fruits are strewn with iron filings. It is dense and intense, in no mood to play today.

Dinner in Helsinki. Opened and drank over 2hrs. Nose and palate were a bit closed at first but after an hour they really got going. Super Ripe red fruit on both the nose and palate. Great concentration and depth with a long finish. Lots of power as expected for an 05 and while im sure this is somewhat shut down it will be great to have again in a few years.

Served non-blind after a rather aroused lunch (Palmer vertical) - and of course way to young. Actually, difficult to judge, but the intensity was certainly there, along with the minerality and balance. Surprised to see it quite open (so it appears), but I suspect (and hope) that there are some surprises yet to come from this wine .
