Another very good vintage of Biondi. This was dark, with cherry tones. Well balanced and full bodied without being the least bit overwrought. Nice acidity. Truly one of the best Brunellos around.

Biondi Santi Masterclass. Much riper, fruitier and more approachable at youth than any other Biondi Santi in the evening. The wine shows dark cherry, rounder fruit, sweet spices and very expressive. Medium plus flavour intensity and long finish. Maybe due to the 1st vintage of a new wine maker? Not sure. To me, it’s probably a miss in its style.

A massive Brunello that has layers of dark fruits including blackberries, plum and blackcurrants. Tobacco and tar. Tannins still exploded in the mouth with big structure and acidity. This wine will need years of cellaring for the tannins to soften. Just like opening any great bottles too early, I felt like I have committed an infanticide. Fortunately, I still have a few bottles intact.

If you’re as big into Italian wines as I am, Biondi-Santi is a name you hear about, read about and then dream about someday getting the opportunity to experience. When I woke up this morning, I had no idea that today would be the day. After the LdH Rosado, I was already on cloud nine and then this gets low-key poured in my glass and for a moment, time stopped. Is this real life? In the glass, the wine looks like classic Brunello with a bright ruby color and a transparent core. And the experience was, in fact, just that: classic. The first impression was that this was a bit austere; a wine that liked the chase. With some gentle coaxing: bright red cherry fruits, dried herbs, black tea, orange bitters, dusty earth and a kiss of spice. As expected, the structure is significant with firm tannins and racy acidity. That being said, everything is perfect harmony. A wine I wish I could have spent the whole weekend with to be honest. This was paired with a simple tomato toast which was lovely and quite tasty. After this experience, it really comes as no surprise that this wine has been the model for the DOCG. A benchmark for sure.

36 months on Botti. Lovely classic and delicious aromas with lots of cherries, anise and autumn leaves. Good full-bodied, vibrant and wonderful wine with this nice forward-facing red fruit with orange peel, some lively prune, mushrooms and with really deep salty and complex finish. A little dry, but far from many others in the 2015 vintage. The acid helps keep this up. The tannins are excellent. Great wine.

With vineyard visits finished, I hung out at the Enoteca di Piazza for some wine tasting to add to the list. With the Biondi-Santi vineyard closed, I couldn't come to Montalcino without trying the master - unfortunately, I could not find a 2016, so had to do with a 2015 (which won't be in my Tasting Story comparison. Translucent purple/brown hue, strong rich fruity aroma. First taste is an extraordinary big burst of dark fruits - cherries, blackberries, currants. Finish is long and long lingering - dry, cheek smacking so with hints of earth, oak, a bit of spice. Yet to develop but with that first taste and controlled tannins - this will be a great wine.
Quite austere nose revealing a quality bdm with gentle oaky tones and fresh cherries. Palate is mainly driven by red berries and fine tannins tightly knit together with the alcohol to create a very pleasant balance. Would age with pride, but drinks vy well now.

Brunello is one of my favorites and this producer is right up there. 2015 was warm so it is a little more punchy than a typical vintage. Great acid, good structure, violets and cherries. I would probably recommend letting it sit in bottle or decanter for a while before cracking it open. Biondi-Santi thinks their wines are ready at release. They aren’t wrong. Just a strong vintage.

To me among the best 2015 brunello, alongside Madonna delle Grazie, Casanova Tenuta Nuova and Canalicchio La Casaccia
