  • This pours very light ruby in the glass with flecks of pink. The nose is expressive and appealing with only modest complexity today, but just a thoroughly enjoyable profile. Aromas are of red cherry, fresh strawberry, rose petals, peonies, thyme blossom, crushed rocks, white mushroom, and faint whiffs of citrus peel. The palate enters on the bright red fruit, turning to medium minus, almost low, tannin, with medium plus acid and medium finish replaying crushed rock, thyme blossom, and citrus peel. All in all this is my second time trying Richoux Irancy and this bottle exceeded my expectations. Again this is a ringer for a nice bottle from the Cote d'Or and I think could easily compete with (or embarrass) some villages or 1ers. Unlike the 2015 Les Cailles I had previously, this was significantly lighter in color and weight with much more elegant aromatics. If the 2015 Les Cailles was like a Gevrey, this was much more elegant ala Volnay, Chambolle, or Beaune. In fact, I think if tasted blind I'd guess a Beaune 1er from a good producer. Again, to my palate this is not to be confused with other cool climate Pinot Noir such as Germany, Ontario, Alsace, it is much more Cote d'Or in its stylistic delivery. This is an outstanding bottle of wine, drinking nicely on the fruit right now, but I expect this to last decades and improve, potentially increasing in score. A great bottle and in the scheme or modern Burgundy pricing, a tremendous value at $37 CAD.

  • Fine local herbs, sound fruit, less chalky, less excentric than the Dauvissat-version, yet very fine.

  • Scored slightly conservatively because I don’t have any experience with Irancy. This was interesting - very earthy with dark cherry. To me a very distinct expression of Pinot Noir - not the same as the Côte d’Or or points south, and not at all like CA fruit bombs. It weirdly reminded me of Bordeaux, but it has very little in common with most Bdx - I think it might be more the tannic structure that makes me think that. This went very well with Asian-spiced duck. It seems to have plenty of materials to endure a fairly long slumber without fear - but I have no idea what comes out the other end of the aging process.
Score: 89+. Relative to expectations: + at least.

  • Light crimson - clear - shy aromas of cherry/kirsch style w a whiff of bbq- light tart mouthfeel w barely enough tannins. A thirst quenching quaffer.

  • Had a couple of glasses last night via Coravin - served slightly chilled this had very attractive cool, crunchy blue and black fruits, with some subtle mushroom and earthy notes coming with some air. I really enjoyed the purity of the fruit without the feeling of oak here (they use older larger barrels). A great "midweek wine" in a good place now but with plenty in the tank for a few more years. Bon!
