Needs plenty of air to fully open up and reveal the fruit. A modern wine with great balance. I would have preferred a bit more acidity but this is by no means flabby. Drink up.

Interesting flavor profile. Still inky and dense but it has become more mellow. With time and air we get somewhat more fruit. Light, soft tannins hiding underneath. I don't have any sense that this wine is past its time, but it is drinking very well right now.

Fine, dense tannins with bright acidity. Vanilla, espresso, and tar in the mouth, and showing a bit of alcohol on the nose. Let's hold on to this a bit longer.

Some game on the nose, followed by dark fruits and fresh leather. Lush, dense texture, very fine tannins, asphalt, anise, very moderated acidity, and a sharp, youthful finish. Provenance: cold cellared since release. Drinking well now, but might be better in a couple of years.

No decant. At first it seemed SO YOUNG and like Cali or Oregon wine. At moments I thought Syrah, then Pinot Noir. Interesting. Blueberry compote, blackberry, smoke, (wife says bacon fat) and olives. The way it was not youthful was the structure as tannins were almost gone. So silky and light on the palette. After just an hour it seemed much more mature. Sweetness of fruit had faded in a major way and I saw more licorice, black tea and graphite.

Oscilating between reticence and pulses of aging fruit; between tarry, grassy tertiary notes and—especially on the tail—memories of ripe, dense summer berries and jam. Great texture. While air does wake this up, it’s clearly on the other side of the hill. Drink through 2018. 92

Good but not great. I was thrown off by the initial flavors of super sugary fruit, figs gone bad mostly. This must have been super ripe from a vintage standpoint. I think they could have gone in a different direction here. It was alright, drink now though.

Very nice. Big nose of spicy black cherry, tar, and sweet leather. Masculine and powerful. Also big in the mouth with deep black cherry and chocolate. Plenty of refreshing acid and a long finish. Quite a package. Seemingly at peak. Paired with pan-fried chicken with tomato and mushroom.

Darn amazing - the Zalto Toro cup (bordeaux glass) saves Quinta Sardonia from itself and pulls the wine together! Rich and supple right now, very complex on the nose with that strong hint of decaying Cabernet earthiness to the mix. Really delicious, slammin' high alcohol - felt it on the first sip.

I feel that this wine is in a somewhat awkward phase, notably less lush and open since the last time I tried it, and right now the tannins are particularly strong. The wine still drank well alongside a big chunk of fatty meat, but I'd suggest significantly more cellar time for this. Try it in a couple of years.

Man does it amazing me how the Zalto Bordeaux glass resurrects this bottle of wine. Frankly, I thought it was dead, tired, over-oaked and green to boot. But then the Zalto makes it harmonious, complex, still with much coconut and extraction but all tied together into a complete wine. And still relatively youthful.

So the big news here is a complete reversal of my opinion of this wine.
I had thought it was dead and over the hill. Meaning the massive rich new oak had fallen off over the years to reveal... nothing. Nothing at all except dry tannins.
But then, last night, in a Zalto Bordeaux glass, suddenly this thing is alive with rich fruit, minerality, shocking drive and energy. The trick seems to be that Zalto Bordeaux glasses just kill (meaning work really well) with amped up Tempranillo. I'll have to test this hypothesis further.

Opaque purple-to-deep-ruby, thin water rim, clear, with spicy, meaty, red and black fruit, touch of vanilla, black tea on the nose. Decanted 30 minutes. Big nose of sweet plum jam, some rosemary, and damp earth. Big, masculine, and chewy in the mouth. Stewed dark fruits, dark chocolate and a short-medium finish. This is terrific juice. Still not really mature, but well into a good drinking window. Solid tannins that should soften considerably over the next 5 years or so, and a firm bittersweet chocolate profile and juicy acidity make this a pleasure to drink.

Treatment: Decanted over one hour and enjoyed over the next four
Visual: Purple to inky core with a deep cerise rim and a thin water rim
Aroma: Sweet red and black fruits on the nose including crushed raspeberries, rich red cherry, and blackberry. Non-fruit aromas include fine vanilla bean, cardamom, and cedar.
Taste: Ripe red cherries sit up front and coat subtler flavors of baked blackberry, bright raspberry, and sour black cherries. A slight tobacco and dark valrhonna chocolate finish lingers.
Verdict: Yum. 15% alc kept in check. The dollop of bordeaux varietals is very apparent (this is 36% tempranillo, 30% cab, 20% merlot, etc) with some lusher flavors that balance out the rustic tinto fino well. I know some traditionalists will cringe at seeing cabernet creep into this one. Not a $50 bottle, but close. My last bottle, but this would age well if I had more patience.

Crazy herbacious on the nose bordering on overcooked green beans. Better than the 2003 but not by a huge margain. Where is QS going? Maybe this is like a nascent Rioja Grand Reserva, just needing many, many years for the nose to calm down and all the parts to harmonize?

First Tasting @ Giron (NK's Home): Dark violet. A sprinkling of small blue flowers tinted in nail varnish carried on a sweet confectionery jammy nose. Also jammy dark berries on the attack with some bitter cocoa and dried herbs. I thought it was a dash bit imbalanced on the alc at the end.

GoP 4.8 - Wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (with a little detour) (Extra Space, Singapore): Another very modern Spanish wine, but really good. This was standing toe-to-toe with the Flor de Pingus 2004 on the night, which just shaded this wine with a little extra refinement. Darkly purple in the glass, this wine was full of coconutty oak on the nose, which offered a typical smoke and tobacco profile and some black fruit buried under all of that. It was not as overwhelmingly oaky as the FdP though. The palate was really nicely balanced, bright and fresh with plush, velvety tannins undergirding slightly meaty, licorice and cherry gummy flavours wrapped in some lovely smoky tobacco. Long finish which showed a flash of heat at first, which faded into a satifying smokiness.

Rubi escuro. 91+

Subdued on the first night. Not at all fruit forward, but big on the midpalate and some pepper on the fairly long finish. Big tannins. E/E.

I totally echo dougsmith's TN. Also, Parker's review makes a lot of sense. Black, inky, violet, extracted, bitter, silky, clearly young (but already accessible) with possible upside. I find the bitterness a bit unpleasant, but after six hours the fruit becomes a lot (magical, even) sweeter with very well-integrated flavors, which almost compensates the bitter. I'll bet it opens up in 24 hours, or after a few more years of aging. Tannins are surprisingly fine for a young wine like this, or else the fruit is just so successful. [edit] Nope, the sweet spot fades by 24 hours. That suggests that a few more years of aging, and then you have a very, very nice wine at this price.
Curious blend of 36% Tinto Fino, 30% Cabernet, 20% Merlot, 5% Syrah; I'm usually a bit happier with the Cab-Merlot blends. The pricing is good for this highly-rated by Parker wine.

Spain TNs; 6/30/2007-7/9/2007: Black with a ruby/violet rim. Austere on the nose with a dominant fragrance of ink; also blackberry liquor, lavender essence and some heat. (15% abv.) On the palate this is quite big and extracted, but silky, heavy, with notes of black cherry and coffee. Slightly bitter on the finish. It's a hard one to score because it's clearly very young and with potential, but at this point tightly wound. Had over two hours of air.

Dark purple color. Distinct dusty coffee notes on the nose and palate. Behind the dry coffee bean flavors are fairly noticeable tannins and some medium red fruit that seems to be overpowered by the coffee flavors and tannins. Maybe this will come around, but I don't see the fruit ever coming into balance.

An outstanding bottle. But yet not as good as we had hoped.

Took over a day to really open up. Not as immediately seamless as the first bottle (same source, 1 week later).
