  • Almost 3 years since last time tasting. The mouth feel is what I thought most striking last time and it’s still wonderful, just not as prominent. Beautiful color, deeper flavors of cherry and strawberry, medium plus acidity, a little off in the late mid-palate but I’ll update tomorrow as I think it’s going to be better. Still a lovely wine, just not quite as tip-top.

  • PnP but felt just a little tight at first so 30-60 min of air wouldn't hurt. After that it's everything we love about these wines. Mid weight, wonderful purity of fruit with little hints of something floral and earthy. Well balanced and delicious.

  • -- popped and poured 20 min. before initial sniff on Day 1; revisited at the 25.5 hr. mark on Day 2; revisited on Day 3 at the 49 hr mark --
    -- tasted blind all 3 days next to 1 other 2017 Goodfellow Pinot; this was marked as wine #1 --

    NOSE: Day 1: tight; ripe red berries; much less expressive than #2 ('17 Temperance Hill), initially; reserved cherry/bitter floral mix, veering a bit in the purple berry direction. Day 2: deep, tight, blackberry. Day 3: very tight --- this has closed-up, to the extent it was ever really open at all. Aromatics were at their best on Day 1, but, really, it was tight all the way.

    BODY: clear; violet-garnet color of shallow to medium-shall depth; medium-light body.

    TASTE: Day 1: quite tight; bitter/red/purple fruited; floral; high acidity; faint mid-palate mineral; Ash and I both clearly prefer this one on Day 1, but both still do like #2; like this a lot, and consider it a re-buy. Day 2: tight; black cherry with background hint of mineral. Day 3: bitter; closed; underbrush. Best on Day 1, but tight all the way. 13.4% alc. was not noticeable. strong HOLD recommendation, as this seems terribly tight at the moment.

  • Wonderful wine - exceptional mouth feel. That’s the most prominent characteristic. Vibrant cherry, ripe strawberry and spice. Lengthy finish. Balanced, engaging. Good stuff. Well done, Marcus.

  • From the beginning on the nose this open and inviting. Bright tart red fruits Raspberries, cherries, alongside some baking spices.

    While the aromatics made the wine seem open and inviting initially, the palate says it needs some more time. A bit austere and slightly disjointed at the start (though I do wonder how much of that was due to me recently brushing my teeth an hour prior to opening and tasting this, toothpaste does linger for a long while). After about two hours, the palate gained more depth and integrated some more, but it wasn't until about 5h into it that the wine really started hitting its strides and firing on all cylinders. It gained much more depth and structure. The fruit became much more precise, tart, brambly and inviting. Ever-so slightly on the edge of ripe, as is the MO in most Goodfellow wines.

    The palate and finish is what continued to draw me into this wine. Mouth coating and lip smacking fine grained tannins and acid. The tart red fruits linger on the palate unendingly, like just picked, barely ripe red berries still tinged with some soil. With time, the structure of the wine became intoxicating. It reminded me of one of Charles Cordier's multi-medium marble sculptures. Beautiful, imposing, structured, filled with detailed nooks and crevices; multi-faceted and nuanced; chiselled with precision to last the ages. The more I paid attention to it, the more beguiling it became.

    As with most Goodfellow wines, this needs time. I suspect this needs 5-7 more years on the cellar before revisiting to truly shine. I'm very glad to have multiple bottles of this because I'm eager to track this over the decades. Drink 2027-2050+

  • Red fruited, earthy, forest, perfectly balanced, and a wonderful nose that kept evolving and eventually over hours became a very interesting black licorice menthol kind of thing. Five more years until I crack another.

    Poured off one glass and then let bottle sit for about an hour.

  • The 2017 Goodfelllow Fir Crest Vineyard Block 11 is exactly what you want out of a great Oregon Pinot Noir. The nose is a little closed (opens up a little with decanting), but it has this wild forest character to it. Initially, very rich red cherry along with flowers & spices. Becomes very mineral and savory with a lengthy tannic finish. So much going on and so much potential. I'll pop my next bottle in 5 years time.
