  • Wonderful, mature wine with a dark plummy color. Great nose and lovely black pepper notes. Showing really well. Wish i had more.

  • Friday Night Brown Bagger (EBCC): Blind. Garnet core with a good amount of bricking. Complex bouquet featuring leather and red fruit, becoming darker and plummy as it sits in the glass. Medium-bodied and plush, with soft tannin and flavors of plum and dark fruit. Picks up a coffee quality with air. Lingering finish. Has a Bordeauxish quality about it.

This was our final bottle, double decanted off its sediment an hour before the tasting.

  • Interesting wine that is outside my normal wheelhouse. If given five guesses, I would never say Cabernet. Deep garnet, this full throttle, inky / mineral wine is rough and rugged. The notes say it is a light and lean vintage. What? I can only imagine what my few bottles of ‘04 are going to taste like. It feels warm and earthy - robust. Dusty finish. Opened for 5 hours. It’s good. It’s complex and complete. A bit too much oak spice, perhaps. Will last for ages but I am not confident it will improve. A good choice if you are looking for something on the wild side. • From memory. In a good spot right now. Dark blackish red color. Nose is quite ripe and dark with black fruits. Cassis, Blackberry. Notes of chocolate. Palate has good balance, with strong but integrated tannins and good acidity. Red and blackfruits on the palate with a smooth medium length finish. medium/high alcohol. Nice value but this one definitely needed time.

  • Hmm. Three years ago I liked this but noticed a missing nose. That still holds; not as much tho. Unfortunately this bottle’s palate isn’t as good. On the nose, hint of eucalyptus and chocolate covered cherries, while in the mouth, resolved tannins and tart cherries, nice and smooth but not a lot going on. Decent but not special; too bad, as it’s my daughter’s 15th bday and I picked this for dinner so she could have a glass.

  • Dark, slightly cloudy maroon color.

Nose shows quite a lot of french oak, cedar, pencil, cassis, underbrush.

Cool black fruits on the palate. Good depth with some salinity and savory herb qualities. Fruit sweetness comes through.

This occurs to be to be quite an "international" styled wine, well made, and it whispers just enough interesting/distinct character to contemplate.

  • It took a few hours for the tannins to lose their graininess, but they were still firm albeit smoother. A wine packs a punch with blackberries, black currant, dried herbs, sweet Oak and a gripping finish. I think this wine's outside date is more like 2025 or later, as it still seems to be improving.

I have tasted different volumes of Montevetrano, including 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. I drank Montevetrano young, drank old and even after 10 to 18 years of maturation. I drank Montevetrano directly from the bottle and let Montevetrano aerate for a long time in a decanter. I really do NOT understand anything about the enthusiastic appreciation of this wine by anyone. Montevetrano remains hard and angular, no matter how long you let the wine rest and how you aerate the wine. My last bottle of Montevetrano. This wine is extremely hyped and not worth the money.

  • Sehr klassisches, reifes Bordeauxrot, Ziegelrand.

  • Great nose but the fruit seem fading pretty quickly...

  • Black center to barely tawny garnet edges. Rather harsh the first evening, next day nose of ripe black fruit, bramble, tar, a whiff of alcohol, the palate is much smoother than previously (helpful, in this case), ripe with still plenty of tannic and tart edges. This definitely tastes like lots of Cabernet Sauvignon (50% according to the current producer site) to me, leaning towards Bordeaux. Pleasant, medium finish. Altogether seemed still very young.

  • Italian & Spanish wines tasting: excellent and earthy

  • Hmm, interesting - in the mouth, this was great, balanced, nice fruit but with excellent acidity and fine tannins on a mid-long finish. The nose however never showed up to the party - essentially nonexistent. If the nose matched the palate, I'd put this at 93-4 but as it was, I'll leave it blank.

  • Another fairly flat bottle. Not bad, per se, but disappointing.

  • slight garnet edges, very complex nose, good fruit, black currants, mushrooms, herbs, rich mouth feel, good finish, years to go

  • Dichtes Ziegelrot. Kaum Randaufhellungen, schwarzer Kern.

Johannisbeeren, Stallgeruch, altes Sattelleder, etwas Zedernholz, Pinienharz. Tolle, Reife Nase!

Am Gaumen ein reifer, ruhiger, seriöser Wein. Auch am Gaumen dominieren Sekundäraromen. Reif, toll, in voller Blüte!

  • I recently did a vertical tasting of 2000, 2005, 2006, 2008 & 2009 from my favourite producer in Italy.

This is still a great wine and perfect value for money. However after having tried the 2008, the 20065 is a little bit more but has great length. Still highly recommend it.
The wine looks crimson colored. The legs are slow. There is moderate sediment in the bottle.

  • Even after an hour in the decanter the wine's tannins were still firm and chewy but the wine was overall smooth. Blackberry, black currant, dried herbs, hard leather and graphite. A wine that is still improving.

  • Deep majestic Ruby center. Bright red fruit, cherry mingled with minirallity granit stone, followed by cocoa and slight smokey earth notes. Silky tannins are backed by soft balanced acidity and an earthy woodsy finish that lingers with black fruit and a dry dusty finish.

  • What an interesting wine. The Aglianico adds a distinctive element to the Cab Sauv and Merlot. Black and blue fruits with plenty of punch and not overly ripe. Some cassis, black currant and Oak. The wine is still on the young side with the tannins still chewy. Looking forward to seeing what happens over the next 5 years.

  • Started off with an astringent, off-putting nose. After a 3 hour decant it transformed into a beautiful, balanced wine with pretty dark fruits, nice minerality and some earth. Good structure and acids. 92 points

  • Oh boy. This will teach me to read reviews. I've been into South Italy recently and kept hearing about this as a 'cult' southern Italy wine. I then went and bought a number of different vintages, mainly due to the great cost / rating ratio. I found this to be a good wine, well made, with red fruit and good tannins that are going to be good for a while. But it was fairly simple and not something I'm going to be excited to bring up from my cellar. Hopefully you'll hear an apology from me in the future. I hope so!

  • Dark ruby, medium body, firm structure tart red/black fruits with a touch or iodine. Very enjoyable.

  • A pretty nose of complex aromatics, pine sap and blackberry. Lean flavors of sour blueberry, leather and firm tannin. Not sure where this can go, doesn't feel like up. I'd drink 1-2 years.

  • Opened and served. Should have decanted to be honest but as a restaurant purchase we didn't have the time.
Quite a dark fruited wine, light leafy, Cabernet dominated we thought , nice silky tannin and overall good palate presence. The nose is definitely the high point of the wine . Not up to the standards of the 2003 and 2004 vintages ( Papies 93) but still a good wine and great value. 89

  • My first experience with this wine and a very positive one. Good dark berry fruit supported by ample tannin. Nice texture but not heavy. Should drink well for a while. (92)

  • Aperto due ore prima di servirlo. Colore molto intenso e profondo.

  • Dark ruby, nose of tart berry. Flavors of black fruit and tomato juice with a hint of iodine on the medium finish. A well made wine that has a distinct flavor profile that some won't like.

  • Brought to dinner at Boca. Not showing its best. Still pretty tannic. Fruit somewhat reticent. A weird off note on the nose. Can't rate it tonight. I'll be curious to see if the next bottle is similar.

  • Retailer tasting: In the bouquet ripe dark fruits. On the palate the same ripe fruits, some earth, pleasant acidity and a bit drying tannin. The wine shows the first signs of maturity. Beautiful mouth feel.

  • Dark ruby, med body with a gritty texture. Palate shows dark berry and charcoal. Long finish with firm tannins and balancing acidity. Unique and nice.

  • Bottle best an hour after opening when it showed some beautiful tertiary aromas - then gradually got more and more anonymous.
Very complex Bordeaux-smell of truffles and cassis and some stony minerality from the aglianico. Pure stone and tobacco on the taste. Tannins already a bit smoothed out - hard to tell where this is going.

  • Dark garnet. Nose of leather, earth, dark fruit, and vanilla. Ripe palate of blackberry, plum, minerals, and vanilla. Superb mid-palate. Excellent length. Integrated oak. Supple tannins. Excellent with food and alone.

  • 2 hours after decanting chocolate, liquorice, earthy graphite minerality, tannic dryness emerging on the palate, nose still v muted. Opened a little more over a few hours showing some concentrated dark berry fruits. Loads of potential, but this is really closed. Won't try again for another year or two at least.

  • In September '07 I took my family to Capri. On our last night, we had dinner in a restaurant with an outdoor terrace on a beautiful clear night. We had a bottle of Aglianico (I can't recall which). When I wanted to order another bottle of wine from Campania, our waiter suggested this wine. The '05 vintage must have just been released. It was young, but energetic and excellent. This is the first bottle I have had since then. Well, it doesn't disappoint. Dark purple with a garnet rim. Nose of smoke, blackberry, cherry, vanilla and menthol. Ripe, full palate of blackberry, black cherry, and minerals. Excellent length. Energetic, focused acidity. Integrated oak. Supple tannins. Really drinking well. Kinda brings back that night on Capri…

  • A really nice wine that started to show more tertiary notes and complexity after 3 hours of aeration. Floral nose and precise tannins would be the key attraction. Very drinkable now.

  • Drunk soon after decanting, in a restaurant, this wine obviously needs much more time (breathing and cellaring). Nevertheless, was impressive already.

Nose and palate both offered rich and ripe blackberries and stewed fruit, particularly up front and in the mid palate, coupled with cedar and cigar box characters. Is quite complex already, in an old world style, but is not yet ready for drinking, as has distinct tannins from the mid palate back, finishing quite grippy and with a noticeable herbaceousness.

I know little about this wine and have not drunk a mature bottle but it looks like it will age like a good quality Bordeaux which needs 15+ years of cellaring.

  • Decanted for 2 hours.
This is really gorgeous and complex on the nose showing sweet ripe blackberries, vanilla, subtle herbaceous components and beautifully well integrated oak.....I just couldn't stop smelling it. On the palate, this is big, rich, focused with smooth tannins, very balanced and classy with medium-long aftertaste and fine tannins. It just lacks a bit more complexity and depth. It is also very food friendly. Excellent! Drink it now-2015.

  • Powerful and very, very primary right now - packed with deep blackcurrant and dark berried flavours framed by notes of tobacco, herbs and tar. There's plenty of richness but also imposing structure with firm tannins and bright acidity, though everything here is very nicely balanced. I would love to see what this turns into with some time, as it has the stuffing and structure to age really nicely.

  • Saw at a restaurant way underpriced, and even knowing that it'd probably be a little on the young side, I went for it. Aromatics are the only thing that weren't excellent on this bottle. Very subtle and delicate aromas of spices, slightly floral, and earth. The palate is tightly wound, but still offered black fruits, vanilla, pencil lead, and gripping tannins. Shows power and depth for what will evolve to be an outstanding bottle with balance and delicacy.
