2019 Cayuse God Only Knows

  • My first ever Cayuse. 45 minute slow ox after pulling from the cellar at 55F/12.8C.

The nose was unique. Very earthy but not the funk I'm used to with Pegau and similar wines. Light in appearance but my first sip was tar with a touch of tea. Over time the tar faded and the tea dominated, with a hint of fruit coming through. I liked it okay, but my wife didn't even finish her first glass. I'll let the other bottles age for a long time or give them hours of air.

  • Grenache blind tasting of the world! Comparing Grenache from Australia, France, USA and Spain.
    Order served blind was:
#1 Ochota Barrels Grenache The Fugazi 2021 (90pts)
#2 Domaine Giraud Grenache de Pierre 2019 (94pts)
#3 Cayuse God Only Knows Grenache 2019 (93pts)
    #4 Alto Moncayo Garnacha 2020 (92pts)
Also included my points for each so you know where I ranked them.

Here are my notes for the Cayuse God Only Knows:
Light red color. Nose is incredible, if you've had Cayuse before you'd recognize it immediately. That barnyard funk, dry aged meat and canned mushrooms (my sister found this note and its undeniably that). Palate was a tad bitter at first and needed a couple hours to smooth out the rough edges. Still incredibly funky and extremely unique. Barnyard, meaty, mushrooms and forest floor. This was better with food honestly and the only thing showing that this is grenache is the light red fruits hidden under all the weird but interesting notes. As unique as this was, I can't give it that high a score. It's good but tries to impress by being the weird one and comes off as pretentious. I'd be really curious on trying this one with some age.

  • Very nice style of wine. Full-bodied, but delicate.

  • PNP. But it would benefit from opening, say, an hour earlier.

  • This was the first Cayuse wine I’ve had that isn’t a Syrah. Fair amount of fruit on the front end along with some of that Cayuse savory funk. I thought it could be a bit bolder through the mid palate and finish. An enjoyable wine but not a memorable one. Perhaps I opened it a tad early.

  • Strawberry on the nose. Light and lively acid on the palate. But 13.5% abv is not ripe for Grenache. The wine tastes bitter and unripe. This is not enjoyable. I used some for cooking and poured the rest down the drain.

Maybe some age will help. Still have 2 to go. But can't imagine this higher than 90.

  • PnP. French funk nose but with plenty of fruit to balance. Red/black fruit. Rare steak blood. Full bodied, great mouth feel. Excellent length in a monolithic way. Very Nice indeed
Day 2: Funk mostly blows off. A more monolithic, but pleasant, fruit experience

  • PnP, consumed over two nights. Night one: funk, savory, bacon fat, this morphed overnight , showing more fruit and less of the savory notes than night one. Delicious both nights, but very different.

  • Happy Easter!! Combined this with 2014 Paul Lato “Le Souvenir” for an old white young red pairing. Served with smoked ham and sausage, side of scalloped potatoes, asparagus, yams, and green bean casserole.

This wine was picked not only for the name but to play well with the meats. That it did. Medium body light ruby color. Soft herbal nose red red forward fruit. Not my favorite style of wine or grape for my taste buds. God only knows is cherries, strawberries, and currants. Tannins we’re balanced and light, finish rather quick, compared to the other wine.

Drinking well now, popped decanted 1 hour drank over 2 hours. Definitely young needs time.

  • The depth, and savoir faire are addicting. With mulberries, ripe raspberries, red cherries, red currants, barbecue pit, anise, violets and dried shallots. The middle palate shows strength and vitality, with a finish and back end that show a flow with slight grip. This is also juicy. Layered. The body starts out full, yet ends light and weightless. Classic Grenache with persona. The tannins are feathery, yet starchy. Grenache typically requires some higher alcohol (over 14%), this defies that concept. Drink 2024 - 2036.
