  • also given to me by Paul. i was to hold on to this for a trillion years in hopes of a miracle but recent moves and space dictates i purge the weak, and weak it is. i'd say it's flawed but that's being kind. never do this again. and i mean that sincerely!lol ;-)

  • "That's pepper jack cheese, man", my wife upon the first wiff from the glass. I don't know about the jack, but the pepper/spice was certainly there with plenty of bell pepper and very little fruit. Even several hours after opening the wine's one-dimensional nose has a too distinctive woody character. The palate feels a bit harsh, with more spice and pepper and moderate red fruit flavors. While I like it's relatively medium body, the mid-palate is lacking and the tannins finish with a harsh grip. I would like to think this will age into elegance, but once the tannins resolve there is unlikely to be any flavors left over. I'll stash the last bottle in a corner of the cellar and pray for a miracle in ten years.

  • Chaine D'Or Open House (Chaine D'Or, in Woodside): NOSE: Ripe, stewed, rich bell peppers. A faint tertiary barnyard.
PALATE: Med+ acid, very nice (~3.6 pH). In Napa apparently they often harvest around 4.3 and add acid. Chaine D'Or is a cool climate for cab. Really reminded me of the 96 Taluau, with it's ripened bell-peppers. Paul thinks the wine needs a bit more aging due to the "green, hard tannins." I thought the tannins had a nice texture, and were low+. My favorite at the tasting. Went beautifully with Anna's ham.

  • Paul brought this to Otis CDP. Chaine d'Or is the winery that he has or will be taking over from the retiring owner. I believe this vintage was made beofre Paul had any real say in the winemaking. I had previously had the 2001 Cab in a blind tasting and thought it was outstanding. This wine was a different bird. On the nose the scent of green pepper was overpowering. Stronger than anything I've detected in a Chinon which is known for its green pepper aromas. Unfortunately the green pepper carried over onto the palate and detracted from the wine for me. I discussed this with Paul who said this was green tannin I was tasting and should subside with time. For now though I would give this wine 81 points.
