  • Bottled in a 0,72-liter bottle. 12,8% alcohol (unlike the previous bottle of 1970 I tasted, which was 13% and in a 0,73-liter bottle, according to the label). Tasted in Barbi Brunello 2010-1968 vertical.

Luminous and moderately deep cherry red color with an evolved reddish mahogany rim and an brick-orange rim. Very characterful, fragrant and even slightly lifted nose with singular aromas of dried mint and lavender, some smoky phenolic notes, a little bit of sour cherry, light sweet notes of blackcurrant jelly, a hint of old dry leather and a touch of something weird, perhaps rubber or fireworks smoke. The wine feels ripe, evolved and silky on the palate with a moderately full body and somewhat tertiary flavors of juicy dark berries, some minty tones, a little bit of sour cherry, light oxidative notes of beef jerky and salty rancio, a hint of game and a touch of rubber. The wine feels high in acidity with resolved medium-plus tannins that slowly pile up on the gums and turn the wine quite grippy. The finish is evolved, quite silky and gently grippy with long, savory and slightly weird yet not unpleasant flavors of minty lift, some rubbery tones, a little bit of dried aromatic herbs, light oxidative notes of beef jerky and soy sauce, a hint of tart lingonberry and a touch of pipe tobacco.

A characterful - even slightly odd - but also very balanced and enjoyable old Brunello at its peak. Unlike the bottle I had 5 years ago - which was perfectly normal - this has some slightly atypical nuances, but even though they did grab my attention, they really didn't distract from the pleasure and the wine came across as pretty lovely effort. I still would say I enjoyed the "normal" version of this vintage slightly better, but even then this slightly weird bottle was among the better wines we had in our Barbi vertical

  • Still holding well. Tertiary notes, tar, leather, herbaceous, very good acidity still. Wonderful at 50 years old and probably could keep a little longer.

  • Ethereal, complex, long.

  • Handwritten bottle number 239
Fill level top neck with no signs of sepage. Almost entirely soaked cork extracted in one piece. Slow oxed for two hours and decanted for sediments and airated for additional 1 1/2 hrs.

Clear appearance with pale garnet colour. Nose is absent of any faults and dominated by wet leaves, underbrush and tobacco. The wine is showing off its elegantly smooth body and flawlessly balances its abundance of acidity with tertiary flavours. Tannins are well integrated and the finish is memorable but not exceptional.

I am flabergasted how much pleasure those well aged wines can provide and will continue seeking them out.

  • Part of the 1991 recorking exerise. Slightly hazy in the glass and a clear tawny / brown colour. Such a wonderful nose, reminiscent of 60s burgundy (this was actually served blind and all called pinot). A developed but floral nose. Mint, menthol, mushroom and barnyard. A wrapped on a medium body, with serious complexity and a balanced palate. Once of the best wines I have had this year.

Drank with ST, DrK and TL.

  • Quite meaty at first but breathes up wonderfully well. There are notes of earth, plum, sour cherry and dried flowers. It is very savoury in the mouth but there is a core of sweet fruit. It has all sorts of interesting, tertiary nuance and a line of brisk acidity adds posture.

  • Surprisingly clear. Raspberry, musky, still got tannins, strawberry even? Earthy, musky, so young! Still fruity enough to go with any meal.

  • Exceptionally light color with a funkyness when first opened that dissipated after about 10-15 minutes of air. Herbaceous with slight flavors of dried flowers and red fruits.

  • Auction purchase. Cork intact, 95% bled through. I stood this up for a day and a half and it wasn't long enough to shake out the sediment. Without that cloudiness, the wine was so pale it almost looked like a rose. Fascinating color. Off putting nose at first had us thinking this was past, but that blew off. Some real nice red fruit and a bit of acidity yet. Great study in super-aged Brunello. 730ml.

  • From a 0,73-liter bottle. 13% alcohol.

Luminous, fully opaque reddish mahogany color with an almost clear, brick-orange rim. Developed, complex and somewhat dried-up nose with aromas of sour cherries, leather, some dried figs, a little bit of sun-baked dusty earth, light developed Sangiovese notes of concentrated raw chocolate character and a hint of fresh red berries. The wine is dry, ripe and lively with mature flavors of sour cherries, some meaty umami tones, a little bit of tart cranberries, light mushroomy character, a hint of cracking old leather and a touch of earthiness. The wine is still - at the age of 46 years - remarkably structured with its high acidity and firm, grippy tannins. The finish is quite long, complex and savory with layered flavors of sour cherry bitterness, some sweeter and slightly smoky BBQ tones, a little bit of leather, light pruney tones, a hint of dusty earth and a touch of tart red fruits.

A very mature and slightly dried-up Brunello at its peak. I guess the wine must've been bigger and fruitier in its prime, but the wine is still wonderfully alive and full of pleasure, so I guess it is correct to say it is still on its plateau of maturity. A harmonious and enjoyable effort, although doesn't reach the extraordinary levels of some older Italian reds I've tasted. Nevertheless, an impressive and very enjoyable older Sangiovese that goes on to show that also Brunelli can take on some aging.
