  • An exceptionally good Viognier that encapsulates the purity of the Rhone floral fruit with a bit of California touch of oak that is present, but in the background. Noticeable and balanced acidity makes this a perfect pairing with Asian fare.

  • Charleston Food & Wine Festival 2023; 3/2/2023-3/5/2023 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): From my recollection this was an easy to drink white. One of those ones that’s a bit lighter, has some honey character and overall seems like it would be good with a warm day. Good acidity which also meant it went nicely with the food.

  • Snow Leopard melon. I had never heard of them. But summer is here and my favorite market loves to carry fruit that most people have never heard of. When I got home, I put the groceries away and then just stared at the melon. I looked it up. Indeed, it is rare. Described as having a bright sweet cucumber like flavor, with subdued undertones of honey and pear. Interesting.

    Kathy and I like to sit outside in the evening, sip wine and nibble on grapes. So tonight perhaps we’ll nibble on Snow Leopard melon. It’s summer in Oregon and it’s hot, so I poured two glasses of slightly chilled 2021 Penner Ash Oregon Viognier. I included a bit of Pecorino Toscano Fresco and a handful of those grapes we like.

    I let the wine sit for a bit and as the chill wore off, it's own aromas of honey and pear got our attention. This is a full flavor Viognier all by itself and since I had sliced the melon into thin slices these aromas soon mixed with those of the Viognier and created something quite nuanced since both wine and melon had distinct flavors of honey and pear.

    I swirled the wine the way I like to do and was rewarded for my patience. It was lovely. I took a few more sips and just let the melon, cheese, and grapes sit there. No reason to rush. This wine is crisp, perhaps even a bit tart, showing more fruit as the chill wore off. We were halfway through the wine before we started on the melon and cheese and then we finished the evening with a few of the grapes. It all worked.
