  • Appearance is probably the least important sense for a wine, but for what it's worth this is maybe the most perfectly coloured wine I've ever had. Pure rubies melted into a glass, flecks of violet show the wine's youth.
The nose is also remarkable: I get peaches. Not usually a red wine character, but there's a subtle but distinctive tropical stonefruitiness alongside the raspberries and red cherry.
The palate is well-balanced between tart freshness and ripeness, with a slight sappy greenness as well as some warm oak spice. The alcohol is a touch high and hot in the mouth, the only thing I can fault.
I haven't drunk much Coldstream Hills and had a bit of a low opinion of them as quite commercial and trading on their Halliday connection, but this wine was really impressive so I'm going to have to try more of their range and re-evaluate my bias.

  • High quality. Drinks darker earlier but opens up beautifully with time. Really complex and evolving in the glass. No hurry but enjoyable now.
