  • This wine was slow to come alive after opening the bottle. Maybe it needs more time. Once it spent some time in the open, it became more lively and blew off the industrial accents that I first detected. The fruit brightened and there was even an underlying freshness.

  • Cherries, something synthetic at first, some depth, hint of smoke; soft, shy tannin - for a Barolo, dark fruit.

  • Hitting its stride right now. Initial aromas of warm spice and pepper develop into a beautifully perfumed nose. Flavors evolve similarly with an initial grip that subsides fairly quickly showing berry, plum, nutmeg, leather and cocoa. Elegant and well balanced now and will continue to evolve for the next 6 or 7 years very nicely.

  • Quick splash decant. Tart red cherry, violets, red licorice and anise with earthy undertones on the first pour which becomes much brighter after a small amount of time in the decanter. Tart cherry, more red licorice, black tea, and the faintest hints of menthol hit slightly bitter, chewy tannins on the palate. The tannins start out with some bitterness but evolve to nice chewy grape skin on the long finish then slowly fade to a more woody, astringent note.

Style & Quality: B+. Has almost everything I want from Nebbiolo, but the 14.5% abv contributes to the bitterness, the slight thinness in the middle, and the resulting lack of acidity gives it that woody astringency on the finish.

Value: NA. Found a bottle of this in my cellar without any purchase history so I can't speak to the value or what I paid for it. WS lists it at $50 which is about $15 more than I would want to pay. Rating reflects quality only.

  • Decanted for ~1 hour; it needed 3 hours. The tannins are still a little raw on this 2004. By the 2nd hour they were partially tamed, which allowed focus on the wonderful fruit and musty notes of barrique. Initially, there was a light oak nose, but this went the way of other highly volatile species. As one might expect, this wine paired extremely well with the pork belly comfit and fauve beans.

  • A very robust Barolo that can be kept a few years more. However, if you decant it now and let it sit for a few hours, you will got to enjoy a very pleasant glass of whine.

  • Very enjoyable. Very well-balanced - not one of those overly robust and often tannic barolos that one might expect. Lovely fruit, and well-integrated - no hints of age on the rim and would have thought it would keep some time yet, but already giving lots of pleasure. Enjoyed with veal at dinner in Hochgurgl.

  • wineflock-2004 Piedmont (The Matasars, Northbrook Il): nose: has a real sweet nose with really good depth and succulent tones of cinnamon, thyme, red cherries, fresh picked roses, wild flowers and a good heaping of herbs. Very pretty on the nose that has a more feminine style to it

taste: excellent medium/high acidity and a real tasty medium feel with good tannins and pretty tones of red cherries, allspice, thyme, herbs, wild flowers, and bits of fresh picked roses. Lovely depth and flows well across the palate despite being as young as it is

overall: group no1, my no3. As with everything else, this is quite young. Very perfumed at this stage and has a real good feel to it. Well worth getting a few bottles of this as it should become an extremely pretty barolo as it ages. Needs some time, and comes off as possibly being an earlier drinking wine, but should also last a good while too

  • Tannic but delicious. Generous fruit with old world overtones. Has wow factor for me. 92-93.

  • Complex, rich and smoky nose with earth, amaretto, cherry, flint and tar and perfume. Very good flavour replays; rich, ripe and smoky; long, toasty finish.
