  • Vinous Monfortino Dinner with Roberto Conterno; 2/1/2024-2/2/2024 (Legacy Records, NYC): Tasting the '04 in a flight alongside the 1995, 1997, and 2000, it was clear that there was some evolution in the winery from 1995-2004. The 2004 was more elegant, especially in the tannins, and more pure than the preceding three wines. There's also simply a lot more fruit here despite not that big of a difference in age. I found this closed off, much more so than the last bottle I tasted, but showed beautiful pure red fruit, red roses, iron, and a hint of citrus peel. On the palate, it was medium to full in body with dark red, smoky fruit, iron, and fresh roses, with fantastic sweetness, and lots of tannin, but very fine grained. I was surprised by how reticent this wine was compared to the bottle I had in 2020, but the potential is high, and this bottle seems to mark a turning point in the winery's quality (not that the older bottles aren't great, but starting with the '04, the wines seem more polished).

  • This was from a tasting pour generously shared from a 750 after a quick decant. After a brief sip I determined to let it breathe in my glass for an hour so, after which the palate began to match the evocative nose; this is a bruising and likely eternal wine, simultaneously perfumed and powerful, just beginning to flash layers of complexity (I would hold for a decade, had I any...)

  • 50th Birthday Tasting (Vesterbro): Pure elegance and finesse with so much intensity that is completely mind blowing. The elegant red currant and strawberry fruit is laced with a refined tannin structure and an amazing depth while still maintaining its elegance. It is not a powerful wine but instead the intensity clearly dominates the wine and just lifts it to a very special level.
    An absolutely stunning wine!

  • Strong showing with modest but present tar and rose aromatics. Very integrated palate with refined tannins.

  • Drank side-by-side with the 08' Monfortino, the 04' had a slight edge. Still quite young and fruit is pretty restrained, but more expressive than the 08 at this stage. I didn't give this any time to breathe, I would think that a few hours of air would be helpful next time.

  • The '04 Monfortino opens with incredibly expressive, cool-toned, and deep aromatics. The nose was dark and showed off both sweet fruit and savory complexity, with a perfume of sweet dark red cherry fruit, tobacco, roses, purple / violet tones, and tar alongside fresh herbal tones and refreshing mint. Whether it's due to age or the vintage, compared to the '10 and '14 Monfortino, the fruit profile in the aromatics is darker and sweeter in the '04, with an exotic, hard candy like profile. On the palate, the wine is incredibly concentrated and dense, yet glides across the tongue like liquid silk, showing incredible finesse, with no perception of tannin. The wine enters with the core of incredibly sweet dark red fruit and some purple fruit tones, with some tobacco and fresh mint, gaining a bit more complexity as it moves towards the finish, adding just a hint of balsamic and smoke. The sweetness of the fruit and the sharp acidity level create an exotic profile that's really thrilling. The '04 Monfortino is the finest vintage of Monfortino I've yet to taste at this stage, slightly edging the '10, although time will tell as both develop secondary characteristics, which has yet to happen even for the '04. The '04 is very enjoyable now after a double decant in the morning, but clearly the best days lie far ahead.

  • A mind-blowing wine of heroic proportions that is poised to be a legend.

Delicate, sweet perfume of Black Tea Leaves, Rose Petals, Sweet Tobacco, Leather and a Gravelly Minerality.

Effortless Power and Immense Structure. There is a purity of fruit that is elevated by the acid and round chewy tannins which creates an off the charts mouthfeel.

This is sexy and elegant Barolo. 97+

  • Very odd showing, fine, herbal nose, but the is somewhat thin and deluted. Not corked, but very strange indeed. From the private cellar of RL...

  • DGs Birthday: Decanted for 24 hours. This has delicate perfume, wooden spices, blackberry, cherry, roses - the nose is elusive, but thrillingly detailed when you concentrate. The palate is another level compared to anything else tasted tonight, there is a sense of effortless power, there is immense structure but the layers of flavour and precision of the fruit and acidity are breathtaking. Truly feels like this will develop into a legendary wine.

  • Barolo Riserva Monfortino vertical 1995-2006: The strongest wine of the evening. It possessed the aromatics of the cooler vintages which intermix eucalyptus notes together with the typical Nebbiolo aromas of roses, tobacco, earth. At the same time it has a very tightly knit palate that provides excellent mouth feel with strong but good quality tannins. A very convincing Barolo; one can see why Galloni gives it a three digit score. 98+

  • 11.5 vintages of Monfortino-vertical:

SO'd for 12 hours. WOTN for me. Less powerful than some of the other vintages (1999, 2006, maybe even 2002 and 2005), but so incredibly balanced, expressive and complete. Beautiful dark notes of sweet dark berries, top-notch quality tobacco, leather, sweet spices, some crushed flowers, tar, but everything with incredibly finesse. It's full-bodied, but feels a little less powerful than some of the others... but makes more than up for it with aromatic complexity and elegance. It has medium-high acidity nad medium-high tannin that is silky but present. Amazing length and tons of complexity. An epic Monfortino and one of the best Barolos I have ever had.

  • (Monfortino mag vertical 1970-2008)
A prodigeous wine, but too youthful for me to formally rate. This has a relatively confected nose, but much less baked than 2006 and with structure. However, this does not have the stuffing of the marvelous 1999 - and I may even prefer the 2002 at this point. Very different to the 2008 (which is much more purer/cleaner) but comparable in absolute quality and potential for me.

  • Giacomo Conterno Montfortino, Barolo Reserva Magnum Dinner (67 Pall Mall): Young tannic and hard to drink. Come back in 5 to 10 years. This has potential and will be beautiful.

  • Since I have a few of these we decided to open one over dinner--what a waste. Decanted and consumed over a 2+ hour dinner. This bottle had gone into hibernation. The character, structure and potential was clearly evident, but showed very little else the entire evening. I thought I might be pleasantly surprised give the other CT notes and Galloni's reviews. I'd wait at least 10 years to open another. At least I have a reference point. 91+++

  • La Paulee S.F. 2016 (Dinner: The Campton Place San Francisco): Decanted this one as much as we could for the time we had…but it still needed probably days! We were pumping on the chest of this one all night trying to wake it up…it just needs 10 more years! But its all in there, waiting to blossom…..super tight structure…amazing deep deep exotic spices and florals..liqueured red berry fruits, subtle tar, orange peel, fresh roses and violets, leather……there is power in there, but also finesse and elegance….a few times I was able to coax out a glimpse of perfection with the right bite of food….will be truly a legend of a wine when the time comes! Definitely +++pts here.

  • Barolo gathering - 85 Giacosa SS, 64 G. Conterno, 89 B Mascarello, 04 Monfortino and etc. (Da Domenico Ristorante, Mclean, VA): Pop and pour. The biggest scale Barolo of my life. Incredibly youthful intense nose displaying decadent red fruits, dry black cherry, balsamico, iron, mineral and root beer. Unbelievable concentration, incredibly layered fruit, intense sweet black cherry driven palate impression, bright acidity, the opulent fruit completely masking the tannins, strong presence of irony mineral and never ending finish. Obviously very young and primary but also incredibly enjoyable for my palate.

  • This, ladies & gentlemen are World-class Seralunga!
Maybe the best Barolo Cru made?
We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting.
This is at this point a very closed wine.
Not giving away all that much at all.
The nose shows the magical Monfortino perfume, once it starts to give something away.
The prettiest roses and faint sweet & ripe cherries, sweet Cuban tobacco leafs, spicy herbs, dry and dusty gravely minerals, touch of smoked tar…
The list is far from complete, it just showed different scents at each sniff, but reluctant to give everything away.
Palate is superbly clean, with sweet cherries, rose water, balsamic sweetness…
This is somewhat discrete and hiding it’s secrets, and at the same time a big monster, just waiting to burst out.
The structure is there, the body, spine, acidity and the incredible length.
    Massive wine indeed.
Just not ready to show us today.
I hope we will meet again!
This is all about world class Cru and winemaking.
Points for tonight… we all know where this will end up in a decade, or more likely two, plus!

  • Nebbiolo: Un monumento all'uomo di langa, un barolo classico portato all'estremo.

  • Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 1970-2006 (Magnum) (maze by Gordon Ramsey, London): Profound and impressive at this early age, with a slightly herbal nose and tremendous structure and depth on the palate. I sensed a note of petrol on the finish. When the acidity rounds off over time, this could reach perfection.

  • An anniversary dinner and a couple of wines (Marea, NYC): In the glass, dark clear red with the slightest tint of orange. On the nose, surprisingly forward, with violets, roses, tar, and a hint of wet stone. On the palate, this is nowhere near ready for prime time, but even so, the violet, rose, and tar come through, with hints of several secondary notes, before the tannins and tartness overwhelm them on the long finish. I would be astonished if this fails to turn into something amazing in 10 years, given how well it shows at this young age, but I also think it's going to take at least 10 years to get there.

  • This could very well be the best Barolo there is. It has all the marks of greatness. Elegant, deep, seamless mouthfilling and long. Just perfect, and surprisingly open already. A monumental bottle of wine.

  • Caratello tasting: "Tre stelle" (Zurich): Pretty closed. The nose shows a bit of brett, which slowly dissipates and leaves room to a balsamic note and forest floor. Beautiful palate, with intensity and balance as in the 02 but with significantly more powerful tannins.

  • Conterno Tasting / Cata Conterno (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Seven years in oak. Tasty. Yummy. Superior class here. A smell you can sniff for years. Highly perfumed with fade roses, cocoa, sandalwood. Enormous on the palate: tannins are present all the way but always a softie buddies. Little young, little closed but magnificent.
At this point, an elegant example. Brilliant. Splendid. How more can I say?

Siete años de crianza. Apetitoso. Apetecible.
Brillante. Espléndido. ¿Qué más puedo decir?
