  • Clarendon Hills Grenache Onkaparinga 2006
Decant from bottle for 90 mins
Color of deep purple, good clarity. Inviting nose of riped black & red fruits, mainly berries & cherries, blueberry, plummy, earthy, caramel, complex with multi layers of naunce. Smooth entry, silky and rich, light spices. Mid palate is complex, mainly echo the nose, full body. Tannins is firm with balanced acidity to uphold the complex rich character. Long finished that lasted 50 secs and beyond, sweet caramel lingers within throat. Still full of life in this 15 year old wine. Enjoy for next 5-6 years. 91-92 pts

  • A fine aromatic expression of Grenache - sweet red/black fruit on the nose, some baking spices and some florals. Medium-bodied with high alcohol, but totally lacking in acidity making this a flabby, overly sweet wine. Try drinking more than a glass of this and see where you end up.

  • This is one firery, hedonistic, fine McLaren Vale Grenache.

Sourced from a 1935, dry grown single vineyard, established using original cuttings from France.

Cherry jam, raspberry, dried thyme, liquorice, pomegranate, a touch of vanilla and lots of black pepper shine on the heady nose and super ripe, medium-bodied chalky feeling palate. There’s a smooth, rounded feel up front, before a strong lift, and a peppery, thyme finish. Very nice, if a touch too heady for my tastes.

    Drink 2018-2021. A Wozza 92/100 (3.6/5.0) from me.

  • Juicy stuff, rich, flamboyant, as one would expect. It has settled down, somewhat, and 10 years is left here, no prob, but why? A wine like this is all about the magnificent fruit, that is found here (and nowhere else); boysenberry, black currant, seductive sweetness and still a backbone that holds things together. A playfull wine, yes, childish even, but sometimes this is the answer (with maroccan spiced 24-hour neck of lamb, chez moi).

  • Tasted blind, deep opaque core with crimson hue. Ripe fruits nose, blackberry, plenty of roasted element and slightly jammy but mellowed.
Palate not far from the nose suggest, soft and mellowed with plenty of sweet fruits, roasted coffee, blackberry, dark cherry, some pruney character and toasty oak. Long finish with soft tannins. Drinking well now.
I did not get the vintage correct and to my surprised it has developed further from my last tasting 2 years ago to show a smooth and supple palate and alcohol well contain this time.

  • Drank this wine over a causal session with my wine mates on a Wednesday afternoon.

Wine opened up to be very fruity and sweet. Good expressions of ripe plums and juicy red berries.

This wine has a high alcoholic content which caused some of the "burning sensations" mentioned by other reviewers. Give it 15 minutes in the glass to settle and it will be balanced by its fruit and body. Good structure enhancing the drinking experience. While it is already 8 years of age, this wine can definitely go on for another 5 to 10 years easily.

I have not had a lot of experience with Grenache and this is probably a good introduction to what a good new world Grenache tastes like.

  • Big fruit! Dark, chocolate, ripe fruit and beginning to settle down. Thios baby could last another decade, but drink now if you dont appreciate old wines.

  • Enorm koncentration, rejäl längd. Hallon och jordgubbar tillsammans med lakrits och choklad, toppat med lite mynta, grillrök, kött och salt. Riktigt maffigt utan att bli för mycket. Bravo!

  • Dark garnet red and the edge looks a little dull, showing nose of blueberry, raspberry, violet, red fruits and cedar oak. When pop and pour I got some pungency on the nose and some heat on the finish and not far from what people commonly said "hurting his throat". Good that with extended aeration the heat has gone off, exhibit fruits cake, sweet ripe fruits, blueberry and violet. Balance acidity, long finish and the tannins is fine and smooth. It is a well made wines with good concentration, but it is not made in the style I can enjoy more. Bought very cheap but it does not really worth the full retail price of $100.

  • Tasted blind. Strawberry jam, fig marmalade and sweet liquorice. Very grenache, southern rhône is the first association. But there is no garrigue at all, neither any galet roulées. Ok, then it has to be an aussie grenache. It's alwaus good to know the preferences of the bottle's owner, so our shot is for Onkaparinga. It delivers lots of pleasure in a fruit-oriented way, and it surely is slightly hot, but that shouldn't be a problem if you like châteauneuf-du-pape grenache cuvées like A la Gloire de Mon Grand Père. Anyway, great fun to drink.

  • Black berries and liquorice on the nose also a lot of minerals. The taste is very direct and big. For being this young the wine is impressively soft and smooth (hey - it is still a grenache but as far as they go: soft and smooth). It tastes a lot of black berries but also a more dark tone that we debated over - everything from "that root I bought at the market that tasted like liquorice" to horse radish or aniseed. All this is not in a French way, this wine yells that it is Australian. The taste is rather long and good with some finishing pepper. Will buy and drink more of this beauty.
