Tasted blind. Drank after 1.5 hours of air in bottle. Appearance slight sediments, medium intensity, garnet colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of stony earth minerality, soy sauce, floral violets, dark red cherries. Developed. On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), smooth fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet ripe red cherries, red plums, licorice, savoury earth, sweet spices. Long finish. Very good quality. Was guessing a 2004 Barolo from the Barolo commune itself. Spot on with the commune. This bottle tasted more evolved than the last bottle of it I tried earlier this year.

Barolo Saturday late night at ES. Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 2 hours. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of milky vanilla oak, red plums, red cherries, sweet spices, slight earth, slight floral roses. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), grippy high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red plums, red cherries, sweet spices, licorice, slight vanilla oak. Long finish. Very good quality, considering the vintage. Not very deep or complex, but will provide enjoyable drinking pleasure as it develops over the next 5 years. Some touch of modern style oak here, but thankfully just enough for it to be tasteful. From Via Nuova cru in commune of Barolo. From their website: Spends 2 years in new French oak.

Clear. Ruby, with a tinge of garnet about the rim. On the nose, this had dark cherry, licorice, tarry earth, sweet spices, and a hint of mint. On the palate, medium(+) acidity, medium(+) body, medium(+) flavour intensity of cherry, tar and sweet spices. Medium(+) grippy tannins and a medium, full-flavoured finish. A decent wine, but not spectacular. Try again in a year or two.

Enjoyable if a bit young still. Medium-bodied wine with prominent crushed red berry notes, nicely tannic mouthfeel, beginning to show the earthier, tarry side of Nebbiolo.

A less well-known producer. A vintage that has its detractors. But the wine is fabulous. Still very young, showing mostly secondary and very few tertiary notes. Tannins have barely begin to be tamed. But wonderful mouthfeel, delicious fruit, well-structured, and an intense finish. Will age very well for at least another 15 years.

Tasted at the winery. Signs of the hot vintage. Some heat and alcohol up on pouring, but got better with some air and swirling. Fine raspberry fruit, a touch of orange, tar and truffle, coffee, vanilla and raisins. On the palate fine and soft somewhat warm strawberry fruit, fine tannins, low acidity. Nice and mature, ready to drink now. (90 – 92)

Tuesday Night Double Blind $40+ (Bin 75): Dark red core with large orange crimson rim; oak is prevalent but underneath it is very traditional, roses, red cherry, menthol, tar; rich and full, soft with good texture, tannins come into play later; very good for 2003 and still fairly youthful; very Marc de Grazia with the oak treatment.

Picked this up for a song on auction. Very typical Barolo flavors, high acid with some old woody notes. Not heavy or sweet despite the vintage, instead elegant and approachable if a bit foursquare. Perhaps some age will bring out more in this wine, but for now, just decent. B
