Monthly Tasting Group EEE #032; Tuscany (@ JD): Beautiful and deep bouquet with dark forest fruits, licorice, leather and autumn impressions. On the palate the same with beautifully earthy impressions, good (sweet) spiciness, some mint, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and good, still quite firm and sticky tannin. Really nice wine. Maturity stage now, but with several years ahead.

Just when you thought this was a pop and pour.....yeah..... so a 1-hr decant is still rather necessary on this one. If you pop and pour this wine, you're STILL going to get oak barrel and very little fruit. It really wasn't until 90 minutes that the fruit structure started to kick in! Cork with purple stain and about 3-4mm of bleed on the cork. The wine poured a deep red with some brown tone into the glass. The nose initially was eucalyptus, aged raspberry and earth. On the palate is a well aged wine, not overdone, with earthy raspberry and some vanilla. The mid-palate is quite earthy actually, with a lot of age peeking through. Lots of spice starts to settle on the palate. At first this wine is **ALL** oak barrel on the finish but as it opened the sweeter side of vanilla and raspberry showed. Very nice wine, and actually think this one has another 5 years on it given proper aging.

Decanted for about two hours. Very nice and balanced on the nose with dark berries and spice. Very elegant and soft taste with nice fruit and some spice. Moderately long aftertaste with some smooth tannins.

Elegant and precise. Sweet blackberry, cinnamon and cedar aroma. Lively, red currant, black tea and licorice flavor. Plentiful fine tannins provide a long finish.

Tasted when opened and the wine was very tight, nose was non-existant. The color was deep ruby with just a hint of brown on the rim. Decanted two hours and it opened up quite a bit to to mostly herbal elements. There was a hint of the fruit I expected but you had to search for it. It did pair beautifully with the veal shanks and was a very nice wine in its own right, however, not exactly a poster child for great Brunello.

I am a big fan of Brunello's and have a lot of the 04's which have been great. Had one bottle of this '03 and was just not a big fan. Did not seem to improve over an hour or the next day

Silvio Nardi at Rococo, Sofitel, (Dubai): Medium to deep garnet, clean nose of red fruits (plum, cherry). sweet spices, nutmeg, herbs. Great fruit-driven attack, medium-bodied, chocolate, herbs, complex with layer after layer, balanced acidity, supersoft completely integrated tannins. Long finish. Drink NOW. Very good. Value/money = 9

Decanted for 2-3 hours. Good nose - cherries, some dirt, and a little oak. Lot's of structure with real nice tannins finishing it out. Long finish with lot's of licorice. at the end. Cherry and cedar, and licorice.... A good food wine, or by itself - doesn't blow me away but very good. I wonder what it will be like in another 3-4 yrs.? Yes, I'd buy again...

Took a little while to open up but once it does lovely blackberries and blueberries and cherries with a hint of cassis. Very nice wine. Will give the next bottle another year or so.

While not a flawed bottle, this one seemed to have given up the typical fruit in favor of a pruned/figgy note. Too warm a vintage or too warm in storage?

The bottle was brought to dinner by firends..........have never had this wine and I have to say it was real nice. Aroma of cherry and rose smelled opulent. The first sip was initially somewhat muted likely due to not decanting it. The wine was very smooth and very crisp all at once. The second mouthful was oral pleasure. Cedars Cherry cassis plum spices and classic tuscany earthiness. The finish is long and filled with berry cherry earth and spicy licorice.............. ripe fruit good bottle and I would wait another 4 yrs on it. It will get better.

Had this wine out at the Catalina Jazz festival. Color was medium dark purple and a little thin for a brunello. The nose is complex and has some depth to it. The nose went a little stale in about 15 minutes but while it lasted it had some leather, green peppers and dark red fruits. Hint of tobacco and was earthy with good balance of oak. The palate was a little flat on the fruit and was leaning more to an everyday brunello. After about 20 minutes it loosened up and the dark fruits and black liquorish come out strong. The tannins were just a bought right. length was ok. I think this wine needs a couple more years although it was good quality. Not bad and worth a try if you don't pay too much for it. Pleasant wine but not over the top.

I Cinquant'anni del Brunello delle Tenute Silvio Nardi (Hotel Cavalieri Hilton, Rome): Ruby core, garnet rim, transparent as expected. Very expressive nose at first pour and it stayed that way throughout: cherries, clean scorched earthiness, mellow oak. On palate, huge sapidity and complex flavour profile; moderate level of ripe tannins, good acidity, moderate alcohol. Rich, nicely balanced, good length and complexity; complete and pleasant in every way. Ready now.

aged brunello drinking well now, great nose. Slight bricking color. I would recommend drinking up as I'm not sure it will improve.

Serious grip even after decanting for and hour. Great with grilled beef and buffalo steaks on arugala with drissled with balsamic vinegar.
