A rare “tasting” - old CdP whites with barbercued marinated chicken; 01 and 09 Clos des Pages white; 01 rich yellow, 09 medio yellow; 01 slightly oxidized nose, nuts, caramel, 09 less pronounced nose, ripe pear; 01 rich, creamy, nutty, long honey-like aftertaste, 09 more lively, rich body, more rank/“acidic” than 01, rich and creamy, really likeable; prefer 09 - has it all, rich, full-bodied - 01 past its peak, still good, but going downhill (like me - I am 52 yrs old :0)

At a tasting in its youth I found this wine so beguiling that I bought three bottles of it. The first two bottles (the latter 8 years ago) proved disappointingly dumb but this one had opened up at last. The colour was light gold. The first good point was that there was no oxidation (often present in ageing white CndP). The aromas were initially discreet but, with air and some warming, there emerged a delicious blend of pear, peach, apricot, walnuts and gingery spice balanced by some still fresh acidity and leading to a firm rich finish which, unlike my last bottle of Beaucastel VV, did not cloy. Very good.

Recent re-release from the domaine. Pear and walnut skin aromas. Medium full on the palate, with good fruit density remaining and enough acidity to keep it lively on its feet. I enjoyed this, though it didn't really have the aged complexity I was expecting.

Medium lemon. Honey, pear, pineapple, slightly petrol. This is my favorite of all the 4 vintages tasted together - 2013, 2009, 2005 and 2001. I asked Paul to sell me a bottle but he said all his wine in the cellar is for tasting only. There are no labels even!
Tasted at the domaine.

Game and Rhone Tasting @ Peggy's (Villa Reynart, Opoeteren): Opens up with some hints of paper/cardboard. After aeration this changes in a nutty kind of impression, combined with vanillin. This one has always been characterised by a firm dosage of oak and it still is, although the palate is getting more interesting by a tropical fruit/fresh figs-salsa. Adequate levels of freshness. Still very fine, not old or worn-out at all. Drink remaining 3 bottles in 2 years. 17/20

A lot of flowers, honey, yellow fruits and figs in the bouquet. On the palate yellow fruits, good minerality, light tart citrus, dry and soft bitterness. Full bodied, elegant and with a long finish. Beautiful wine.

Gold lemony in colour. Round and smooth and the marsanne bitterness has mellowed. Still the wine feels a bit unbalanced and wired. Not sure of this has roussane but if it does maybe the roussane is shutting down. 88 at best

Odd peat/scotch nose. Lacking in acidity and cut. Others really liked this and preferred it to the 2000 Clos des Papes blanc served alongside, but I did not care for it.

Occasional tasting group: C9duP 1998 - 2001 plus a few extra's. (@ PVa): So much better than last year. Smooth and soft. Same tastes, but all in a more elegant harmony. Full bodied. Apparently this wine needs some time to show its quality and complexity. It is starting to show now and since there are no signs of old age, there is a chance it will even get better the next few years.

Dinner @ Christiansholm (Christiansholm): Oily with a fresh and only a bit fat fruit; strong hints of garrigue and only a little bit of alcohol showing - lovely, fresh wine. 91+

This has aged very nicely and has taken on an intriguing honeyed tone and nuts and really delightful. I could drink a ton of this and really elegant with food

Pale gold in color. Nose floral and smokey with a bit of sea air thrown in. A bit more viscous than the Vieux Donjon with a mellower, weightier, more integrated palate. Flavors of peaches, a bit of chalk (not unpleasant), and vanilla noted. Very nice, would be a good match for seafood.

1990 and older Châteauneuf-du-Pape offline at Kaspar's (Seattle, WA): The nose is fairly restrained showing stoney minerality and some fruit-pit notes. The palate is nutty and extremely dry showing loads of minerality, very precise and clean, yet not very giving. The finish shows roasted nuts.

Tasted from Vintage Wines, Ltd. wine bar. Light straw with clear rim. Moderately intense nose of wet stones, orange blossom and dust. Medium-bodied on the palate, with somewhat low acidity and flavors of mineral and citrus. Medium, smooth finish. Overall very nice, but a bit more acidity would add the crispness that this wine is lacking.
