  • The color is clear and quite evolved, honey/amber.
The nose is clean, med/med+ intenstity but offering complexity with dried apricot and peach, honey and vanilla, a bit of oxidation here with ripe green apple, grape compote, roasted almond, developing to developed.
The wine is sweet, full body with high intensity, low alcohol (8%) and high acidity, utterly fascinating in the palate, mouth cleansing acidity, the palate is way better than the nose, ripe fresh fruit, peach, fresh and tinned pineapple, light honey notes, not cloying at all, nice creamy texture like a wonderful lemon pie, caramel and roasted almond in the long finish.
Outstanding quality, a grand cru indeed, drinking beautifully now but it could hold.

  • Winery Visit (@ Robert Weil, Rheingau): 110 gr./l. residual sugar in this wine. Bouquet with a lot of honey and apricots. A lot of sweetness on the palate; pineapple, apricots etc. Beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity. Can probably last for decades. Great wine!

  • #17-08. From half bottle. Golden colour. Pretty strong sulphur on the nose, slightly reminiscent of Prum. Behind that, an enticing aroma of pineapple and green apples. Very sweet on the palate, and that's what seems to hit me first. But there is plenty of green apple acidity to counterbalance everything out. Not the most complex of palates, and perhaps a bit lacking in minerality, this is nonetheless quite a delicious bottle of Auslese.

  • Opened a 375ml bottle this evening. Purchased upon release at De Vine Wines in San Francisco and stored in cool cellar since. No ullage issues and cork was intact. Wanted to revisit this wine. Served among friends, so my notes are limited to some general thoughts: Color is lovely and right on target with no indication of early aging. Nose is very rich. Forward fruit flavors that one finds in dessert Rieslings, including a more pronounced apricot element with a slate/iron finish. Good flavors throughout. Good acidity too. Will age another 15 years quite easily. Perfect with Christmas fruitcake, but would like to have tried this with Welsh rarebit as Michael Broadbent mentioned doing in his Decanter magazine on 5/10/10 column.

  • Lynch Bages tasting (12 different vintages) at the Rheingau Gourmet Festival 2012: golden amber color; fruit bowl, especially pine apple and grapefruit aromas/flavors; delicate fruit acid on the palate; smooth and ethereal at the same time; like a liquid exotic fruit melange.

Grand finale of the Lynch Bages tasting: this bottle was really a treat.

  • The estate fills that this is as good as thier 1959 or 1971. So they say the 1976 Auslese is in its prime. So go ahead and wait 33 years for this one to come around and be in its youth.

It is shockingly beautiful and developed now. Oranage, tangerine and a creaminess not in the other bottles.

Apperently this vineyard site has some very special geothermal activities that make it what it is. Which makes it result in totally dry botritys. Total production is around 750 bottles. $75 for a half bottle.

  • VDP Rheingau Riesling Review 2009 (German House, London, U.K.): @ Great Rheingau Riesling Review 2009, London:
Nice, I am carrying a bag of "superfood-fruits" and standing in a traffic jam with the fumes going right through me. In other words, a great nose. Broad attack that takes over the tongue, reminding me of fowl red apples. The mid-p tastes as if one took a handful of Haribo Tropical Fruit minus the "chew-factor". Very good finish.

  • My WOTN. Rich golden yellow, heady aromas of mango, candied passion fruit and vanilla. Sweet and creamy on the palate, tantalizing depth is counteracted by saline minerality. A hauntingly naughty wine. Serve this at the end of Valentine Day dinner and you are assured a night- that will be as sweet and unforgetable as this wine.
