Bottle 240/1460- Candied fruit, spice, wild herbs, dates, prunes, perfume and forrest fruit. Deep, expressive and layered. Good density and power, unlike many 96 Leroy I tried. Maybe because this is a grand cru.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Third Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia): Beautifully mature nose displaying ripe red fruit with a hint of black, strawberry and rhubarb tart, pomegranate, sour cherry, caramel, cinnamon, grilled cep, sap, sous bois and limestone. There is a hint of stem/green which is interesting. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of concentrated red fruit, rich and unctuous, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with a hint of caramel and sous bois at the end. It is clearly expressing the concentrated Leroy style and the structured vintage character.

Winefields Pre-Sale Tasting and Lunch (Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen, Riemst, Belgium): From the Wijnmakelaarsunie Museum Collection. Much more lively and youthful colour than the previous two wines; hugely impressive on both nose and palate, concentrated, with a lovely sauvage, excellent fruit and freshness and with firm tannins, still has a lot in reserve, very good persistence and length.

Multi-faceted nose that just kept opening and evolving over the course of an hour in the glass. Beautiful raspberry, blueberry, and floral notes with lots of Morey-type mineral. Aside from the aromatic profile, you've got to appreciate the intensity without weight that this wine has. Delicious and seeming to drink at its peak now, though of course it will last.

Nick's Spectacular Birthday Dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Wellington): The colour is deep garnet, slightly deeper than the two DRCs. A expressive, explosive bouquet, very intense, suggesting another dimension of ripeness from the two DRCs. This impression is confirmed on palate, with much more breadth and fruit volume than for the DRCs. There is huge power, fruit weight and structure in this wine. Clearly the most accessible of the four red Burgundies, with a silky mouthfeel, rich, ripe, decadent and explosive on palate. The flavours were earthy, red berries and a little cherry cola. The palate did exhibit bright acidity, which lent freshness to the Leroy, and good intensity. I began to wonder if the wine was perhaps a little over-extracted and overdone and although that was the direction it was going, rather than the other way, ultimately I concluded that this was the finest Clos de la Roche I had ever had. A tremendous wine but fourth of the four red Burgundies here, in this tough competition. Again, drinking well now but plenty of stuffing for the future.

Still drinks as a very young wine, has a great arc in front of it. Great!

Unsurprisingly, still showing very young. Dark fruited, spicy, but classic Leroy plush feel too. "Cleaner", less herbaceous than the 01 clos vougeot served alongside it. Come back in 10 years!
