La Festa del Barolo: Gala Dinner (The Pool in NYC): Drinks nicely. Again very fresh and drinking nicely. Served slightly cold so it was harder to get as many flavors from it and the downside to this format is it’s all small pours so can’t always go back.

A small gathering - 02 Lignier MSD VV, 82 and 86 Mouton, 96 Giacosa Asili (Undisclosed location in McLean, VA): Initially showing a lot of VA. Fully mature nose displaying subtle but concentrate sweet dry red fruit, strawberry, dry cherry, caramel, cep, cedar, leather, licorice and mineral. Fully integrated palate, nicely layered concentrated dry red fruit, unctuous, warm and round, bright acidity and mineral, and a long ripe red fruit driven finish with caramel and cedar at the end. IMO, Aldo Conterno’s wines from the 60s and 70s are exceptional. It certainly improves with air. Really enjoyable but the last drop was the best.

Opened and let sit in bottle for a good 2 hours. Poured to glass. Original nore was not Barolo like at all in fact notes of Coco powder and dried chocolate notes i have never smelled before from nebbiolo. After it aired there was a cleanness to it. Big floral nose with mushroom and tarry notes. This was all about its freshness. At 53 years old the acidity framing this wine was solid. Way younger that on can expect. This 67 was singing from the first sip. Long red tart berry fruit finish with leaves and earthy notes. Lots of power and freshness here to carry this a while yet. Intoxicating and well worth the wait. Drink now.

Old Barolo Night (Bar-a-Thym, Singapore): Probably the best of its flight (a trio from 1967), this was very enjoyable. The nose again showed that balsamic and soy savouriness of old Barolo - almost threatening to cover sweeter notes of dark cherries and berries, before drifts of spice and tar, and that typical lift of flowers started coming in at the edges. The palate had a lovely sweetness to it, showing dried strawberries and red cherry flavours kissed with a hint of spice; before bits of earth, a shade of tarry smoke, and a bits of minerality led leading into a long, gently complex finish hinting at dried prunes. Soft, gentle and wonderful mature - lovely, characterful stuff. Not a complete wine - it felt a bit tired at points - but so charming.

Bitter nose which hints to oxidation, luckily there is no bitterness on the palate, instead the wine is ok, tar and meat soup flavours, fairly good but does not reach the heights of the -64 consumed in the same tasting.
