A very good wine, where the bouquet is strong and the taste is deep. Not over the top yet, but must drink now. Easy drinkable, and interesting to try a pure Mourvedre wine. Definetely try again!

This is quite a good value; there aren't many sub-$20 cali wines that will remain drinkable at 7 years on, but this is at its peak IMHO. Still viscous on the first day, it has a sweet bouquet of cherry, leather and jonquil. The palate and finish have plenty of black fruit with lots of savoriness coming thru. By day 2 it was a bit thin and hot as it lost some structure, but still nice.

Decanted for 1 hour. Did not feel it over-aged at all but ready to drink now. Oak has disapeared. Dark fruit with herbal and pepper touch. A bit of sweetness at the end. Very smooth, pleasant to drink. Good QPR !

Day 2 note: this wine opened up beautifully and impressed dinner guests with its intense fruit (mostly cherry, some plum) and herbal profile. Paired pretty well with a bright light tomato sauce on rich pasta and a complex herb-spice-avocado-tomato salad. As seems with mourvedre (mostly, always?), a day vacu-vin'd in the fridge really opens the wine up which then presents a balanced, complex, and deep fruit and herb delight. I would buy again except this vintage might be done at this point. Excellent QPR at USD 13.

Test at 68 deg F. Pop and pour. Rich thick almost chewy heavy mourvedre with nice aromas. Maybe overoaked. Not sure if it has the tannin and acid to evolve next few years, I would say drink now. Aroma of persistent gentle and dusty cooling sweet spice, mocha-chocolate, some herb (bay leaf?) and forest floor/mint, a nice mix. In the mouth attacks super-rich, almost syrupy and off-dry, with neither sweet nor sour dark fruit (cherry comes to mind) and a pulse of chocolate, oak, and notable heat. Finish falls off quickly then lingers with a bittersweet nutty lingering taste. 15% abv. California Mourvedre. Dryish to off-dry. Body medium-heavy, Acid medium, Tannin medium or lower. Good QPR at USD 13.

Very interesting and good bottle of wine. Dark, earthy, dusty, spicy, but fruity and quite acidic as well. Some oak, but very well integrated. Slightly bitter, but medium nice finish with some tannins. At this price, very much recommended!

Unusual Varieties From California: [Tasted blind] Candied cherry raspberry nose, very big, plenty of oak. Fruit is very sweet on the intense, spicy palate. Thin bodied, soft structure, fruit-driven, dry finish with lots of acidity. My guess: Sangiovese.

Nice aromas of dark berries & spice, eucalyptus, pepper, a little hot and tannic, could probably lay down longer. Decanted through an aeration device and waited about half an hour. Heat and tannins now resolved, elegant and balanced. After an hour our so devolved into simple red berries. Excellent PQR.

Great fruit on the nose, very dark in color. Opened and drank immediately after chardonnay, pinot noir and bordeaux and this was a nice finish to the combination. Light in tannins, medium body that supported good fruit and intensity. Liked very much.

Mourvedre (Fort Collins): Spicy berry fruit nose with some mocha, oak, herbal aspects. Lush and intense on the palate; spicy, chocolate, earth, sweet, full body. Short finish but this improved with air and mellowed into a much softer, rounder wine that I actually liked despite being somewhat of a high extract brute without much complexity.

This rich mourvedre from California concentrates ripe, dark, almost syrupy berry fruit, dusty dark chocolate, and mint and bay leaf mostly at the front half of the mouth. After 1.5 hours of decanting the mint and bay leaf opened up into forest floor and dust became earthy. Nose has aroma of dirt, gamey meat, and chocolate with a hint of mint. Strong on the nose and the attack, weaker in the mid-palate and finish, has sharp acid around the front of the tongue with medium tannins. After 24 hrs in the refrigerator fruit in the mid-palate strengthened; wine paired very well with 85% dark chocolate and also with strongly herbal pasta with diced meat. Finish is mostly short but persists with a hint of almond nut flavor.

This is one of life’s guilty pleasures. I found its musky aromas of ripe plums and black cherries strangely seductive, with essences of cedar and coffee drawing you in further into the glass. The palate is a blend of full-bodied blackberry and cherry liqueur flavors with a balanced, tannic finish of dark chocolate leaving you longing for more. If you liked it on day one, hold on to it for another day or two (if you have the will power) and observe how the flavors and aromas become more rich and complex! Decanting or aerating may speed this along, but this is one is well worth waiting for.

An interesting cherry/menthol/herbal amalgamation on the nose, that ends with a bit of overripe banana. Continues through onto the palate, especially beginning to show that banana peel thing that I couldn't place at first, but which is abundantly clear now. A really fun thing to drink, which will provide dimension to any lineup it's in, I think. Medium to medium + body, with a medium - finish.

Deep garnet color with some rim change (unsual in a wine this youthful). Although very slight rim change. Pronouced nose of leather and musk, an underlying dark cherry note with a hint of sultana. Not giving up much which I assume means it is youthful. A bare wiff of alcohol. Palate has medium - tannins (hardly there at all), medium - acidity, medium + body, and the tastes from the nose follow through on the palate, with more berry and liquor coming out on the back of the palate. The finish is medium. I sense that it is in development as it is showing "quietly", like a Beaucastel that has just been hatched. Very good for its price ($15 or so) and youthful. We shall see. Just opened so we shall see where it goes.
1 hour open much broader raspberry fruit showing off. 2nd day, justing sitting on the counter in turned into something else entirely. Almost like a deeply fruited Brunello. Maybe this little $15 bottle just needs some time to come around?

P&P. Color is largely purple, some black hues, medium-full body. Nose of ripe plums, fig, perfumey spices, chocolate, and some wild game. Flavors of plum, cocoa, thyme, smokey meat and some oak sticking out. The alcohol is also significant in a fairly short finish. Low acid, moderate tannins. An OK Moo-ved, and a straightforward value at 12.

Bright cherry and plum notes nicely balanced by cocoa and vanilla with subtle pepper and smoke on the finish. Nice acidity that provides a good balance to the soft tannins this wine brings. After some time in the glass this wine mellows significantly and while it loses a bit of its initial complexity, it still remains balanced and quite pleasant on the palate. An easy drinker - either on its own or with food.

Berries and plums on the nose, with touches of vanilla and cocoa; sweet, bright berries and plums, a bit of acidity, and some peppery spice notes at the end; modest tannins, which disappear with time, and not much of a finish. Too sweet for me, and it didn't improve with some time in the glass or on the second day. Probably best as a pop and pour, and maybe slightly chilled as noted in a previous note.

9 Blind Mourvedre: The nose of this wine had bramble fruit aromas with cedar, eucalyptus and white pepper notes. There was also some heat evident on the nose, but with all of the other high toned aromas, it wasn't very obvious or offensive. The palate had spicy dark fruit flavors with minty chocolate and dusty earth flavors. Medium to full bodied with a fairly long finish. When this wine was revealed as we saw that a $15 wine was able to fit in with several Mourvedres that cost much, much more, we were all quite surprised. Several in the group pledged to go buy multiple bottles the very next morning. This was a very nice drink, and one of the best values that I've experienced in quite a while.

This wine is purple, black in the glass. The nose is very impressive and promising, with potent dark chocolate, cedar, fig paste, plum, and soy sauce tones. After a second sniff I find potpourri-like floral notes along with a very slight brett component, slightly gamey. The chocolate notes go on for DAYS on the nose. On the palate, the wine does not deliver what the nose promises. It has a good attack on the front palate with plum and mocha flavors, but mid-palate is hollow and finish is shorter than expected with a bitter, green flavor component. Acidity is low and there is a perceptible pinch of residual sugar. The alcohol is hot and throws the wine off balance as expected (over 15%) and the tannins are none to to speak of. Overall, still a decent wine for the price, quite unique. Maybe needs air.

Purchased for $11. And what a buy!!! I haven't had this wine in a few years, but this vintage is much better than the past few I've had... in fact it's easily my favorite. There is less of the eucalyptus notes that mouvedre is known for, but it's still there and it really makes this wine interesting. Out of the bottle, the wine exhibits ripe red fruits of cherry and strawberry all supported by some earth and eucalyptus. With some air, this wine really gains in complexity; hints of dark chocolate/smoke, sweet black cherry, game, and that eucalyptus that really makes this wine unique. The fruit blends with the mocha on the palate, and the result is a nice full, sweet, red fruit profile. I really enjoyed this from first drop to last. I think this would make a perfect Thanksgiving wine... and you can bet I'll be serving it in a month!!! Very Good

Always an intriguing wine, and this vintage is no exception. Aromas and flavors are bright and cran-cherry like, with elements of cola and spice. Medium-bodied, juicy, and tangy. A good dose of acidity keeps this wine crisp and alive on the palate. It's a lively enough red to serve moderately chilled, and makes for a wonderful summer red. Recommended.

Wakefield Liquors Rhone Wine Tasting and dinner (Store Four): 7/3/09: Rich. Dark fruits. Nice acidity. Easy drinking with all that soft fruit, but keeps the interest with hints of mint, mocha, and even a meatiness. Nice. 88
4/24/09: This is a fruit forward wine, full of raspberries. However, there is a touch of that mourvedre gaminess in there. Medium bodied, very easy to drink. Nice bottle of wine. 87
