04691 Drinking with Jayer's Echezeauux 97 to compare. Color is more purple and orange than HJ. Aroma is very dusty and misty. Black pepper, smoke, ripe fruit, sweet, prune. Aroma is very 97, hot and ripen. High tannin but very well integrated with the wine.
Around 2 hrs aeration, more smoke and game, not enough acidity (bc of 97?)
Around 3 hrs aeration, dry, tea, dried flower petal.
This bottle is like wearing a misty veil all the time. it's not as elegant as the 97 HJ echezeaux.

1990 - PNP, barnyard nose, clearly has a solid structure and sufficient tannins which through dinner started to soften and integrate nicely. Drinking nicely now but need to start drinking bottles in the cellar. 94 1991 - didn’t like this from the start to the end. I think this was an off bottle. NR 1997 - surprisingly similar to the 1990. Quite approachable and could go on for many more years. 93+ 2004 - this was the wine that redefined burgundies for me and it continues to be the echezeaux that leads the pack. That ethereal nose, the perfect acidity and length on the palate. Even better then the bottle I had last year. Drink now, not sure how this will evolve with time but certainly hope I ll have the opportunity to find out. 96 2009 - just too young for me at this stage, a medicinal nose which continued through the evening. The wine started to gain some weight in the glass and the power and structure showed clearly. But needs a lot more time and has the potential. 93+ at this stage

Sweet, pretty wine that is light weight, pleasant but far from profound. Has classic DRC elements, a heady nose but there is unevolved or astringent note that reminds me of so many other 1997s, a dullness or stripped quality. From methusalem.

Just a little disjointed showing some sweet and sour elements but was a very satisfying drink, although not a great DRC Ech. It was moderate of weight with notes of moss, compost, beef stock and ginger on the nose. In the mouth there was plenty of mineral character and the sweet fruit had a peppery edge. It finished with a little quinine like bitterness.

Excellent! Drank it with friends to celebrate my wife's birthday. Wonderful!! Decanted for 2 hours and drank for 2 hours. Good until the last drop. Very floraland plumy nose with a pepper under tone. Very elegant. Tannins are so well integrated. Very long and complex finish. Wish I have more.

This got a quick splash decant. the best part for me was the nose -quite captivating. While this got somewhat better with air I found there was not enough fruit core here to balance the excess acidity. Nice but not a great bottle (of course expectations are elevated when it comes to DRC).

Magnum, from the first Verlin auction. Great nose, and actually blew away the mag of 97 La Tache also served. A lot of fun, and a surprise to the plus side.

Overall a correct wine with good purity but lacks that bit of depth, power or complexity to make it a great. Always the weakest wine in the DRC lineup.

On the nose----olives, dried leaves, and cigar box. Muted fruit flavors, mushroom, and earth, searching and hoping for some fruit to surface from the dry mineral finish; never did. Austere, but unique.

Many other reviews have been somewhat negative to this wine, but our bottle had none of the problems that have been reported. Great visual clarity, with a rich and vibrant nose bursting with blackberries, bacon, wet earth, spices, tobacco, and licorice. Beautiful midpalate with perfect levels of acidity and moderate sweet tannins, and a long, long finish. Based on this bottle, it should probably drink well for another 5 years at least.

Lots of raspberry with a touch of forest. Animal, delicate, complex. Great nose. Raspberry also in the taste, delicate but not optimal. A bit too filigree. Changing aromas. Nice long finish with a little wood and truffle.

Maroon, fading to amber at the rim. A touch of barnyard at first. Marginally better than the previous bottle -- much earthier, showing dried leaves, peat moss, and mushrooms. Full bodied, with rich, evolved fruit, with a moderately long finish that turned a little astringent. The acid becomes more pronounced as the wine sits in the glass. Drink up.

The cork had soaked through and the bottle had a moldy rim, but the wine didn't seem obviously cooked or corked. Fire-engine red with medium browning at the rim. Loads of brett, which blew off after about 15 minutes. After all was said and done, this turned out to be a pleasant, medium-bodied, slightly acidic wine that showed red raspberry, bacon fat, dried leaves, and white pepper. Nothing particularly special, and I'm glad I bought this at a close-out sale.
