Något nedslipat, mycket mörka bär, lite choklad och en del kaffe. De rostade tonerna slår igenom lite när frukten lagt sig. Dracks utan mat vilket sångare inte skall göra nästa gång! Nog grymt till höstens grytor!

Wonderful nose of lemon drop and eucalyptus. On the palate, sweet black fruit, black pepper, bitter tobacco, and a touch of grainy tannin that shows up on the strongly acidic finish. This is dominated by the spice and tobacco, and on its own it comes across as overly acidic, but it works wonderfully with rich food; pan-seared lamb chops were an excellent match. A very good value at a little under $20.

This is not the kind of wine where you sit in an armchair, sip, swirl, and love the wine. The actual taste is youth- lots of tannins wrapped around a core of blueberry that will need years to wind down into a balanced wine. This wine -needs- food. It starts to come alive then.
Moreover, what it really wants is 20 or 30 people outside eating grilled lamb with that strong garlic-mayo called aioli, and as many other strong flavors to beat against that it can. Then, this wine is spectacular- in the sense that it cuts through the aioli and the chatter, makes you taste the tannins and blueberrys, cleans the mouth for the chit-chat and the next bite, and in general keeps the party going.
Living proof, this wine, that there are various circumstances for various wines.
By the way, I started it cool, put it in a water jug for a couple of hours, and kept it sitting outside near the grill for people to pour for themselves. I myself found myself always reaching for the pitcher to fill my empty glass.

This is a follow-up to an earlier note. I was overwhelmed (in a good way) and delighted the first time I drank this. I had one of these a month or so ago, and I was not sure what to make of it (so I did not record it). I just had to have another. Tannic and abrasive, like asphalt. Sweet and fruity, like plums. Sharp and spicy, like pepper. Rich and powerful. It is in some ways too much for me, but there is also so much going for it. For someone who likes full-bodied, full-throttle wines that nonetheless have balance and structure, this would be a good one to try.

Easter dinner 2011 (Seattle, WA): Here's my star of Easter dinner. Dark purple color. Beet juice. Raspberry and aniseed nose. Almost punishing aromatics. You like it, but you have to pull away. Full bodied, rustic beast of a wine. I love it! Umami flavors along with black pepper, snappy licorice and brooding black fruit. Massive tannic grip due to the youth of this one, and a long, dark finish.
Always a favorite and while I'm sure the Pinot was a better match for the ham, I couldn't get off this.

Inky red-purple color with a lighter shade (like cranberries) at the edges. Rich, creamy fruit on the nose helps to offset a little alcoholic heat (14.5%). Medium-full body. Refined and sophisticated texture, well structured, with plenty of black cherry and plums. Complex, but not from the fairly simple fruit flavors alone as much as their interplay with texture, acids, and tannins. One important point: the tannins. As might be expected, being a Bandol, this stuff needs to sit for a few more years. Try back in 2013 or 2014, perhaps? Great future in store for these fellas.

This was just too young. On day one, I thought the wine had nothing for me. On day two, I could taste the youth. On day three, the youth was appealing. On day four, I could taste the underlying blueberry fruit, sense the beauty that the wine will become, years down the road. It wasn't until day four that I had any intention of buying more, but if and when I do I'll put it away for years.

Popped and poured to accompany an entrecote with very tasteful and rich sauce, mushrom stew etc, because the 2001 Ch La Tour de By we had opened was too thin for the food. This Bandol was just the job for that meal - the food matched the herbal spices in the wine and took down the fruit a little. Good harmony, and nice tannins to match the fat of the meat.

Definition of "rich" and "lush"? Put your nose in the glass and be overwhelmed. There is a cocktail of elements, southern spice, minerals, coffee, all very warm (not cooked) and embedded in a dish of fruits, dark, ripe, red.... Soft when it enters the mouth, body that really fills the mouth, and enough acids to not make it too sloppy. Significant tannins, but not nearly as tough as the 2006-vintage. Very enjoyable now, but perhaps some storage will open it up a bit - i.e. refine the huge fuity elements making them less dominating?

Earthy, blackcurranty nose with liquorice and other dark scents - shows promise as still a bit young and undeveloped. Lush wine, good concentration but some 2007 softness there too - not a tannic monster by any means. Tannins are there but are well hidden behind ripe fruit. Deep, earthy flavour, stern fruit, beefy and unevolved/inky at present but this should be a good wine from around 2015. I will be getting a few more bottles. Additional note: saved a bit for the following day - showing a bit more earthy complexity now but also a bit more tannin.
