  • Drank this bottle at a dinner with my wine mates at Chao Shan Cuisine to celebrate someone winning the lottery.

Dark purple. Rounded, smooth, with notes of aged leather. Balanced with black pepper and a sweet finish. Some ink and iodine notes were detected in the aftertaste.

  • Polished and glossy, this was PnP next to an 01 Greenock creek. Both were quite rich and more similar than different. The GC was the more aromatic and open, perhaps a bit more layers and details but this was tall and had a lot to offer. I do think they are best on release but it’s not like RP was off his rocker here ;)

  • Now let me first off state that Glaetzers Amon Ra is one of my Aussie favourites, so I may be biased. Deep dark red with a hint of brick at the edges…but still youthfull. This reminds one of a school yard bully. In your face and dominated whatever I was eating. Huge nose, a balance of red and some tropical fruit like stewed guava. Also some wood and dry camp fire aromas suttley in the background. Beautiful follow up on the palate with continued stewed berries and spicey fruit cake. Long lingering finish perfectly rounding out each sip.

  • Dark blackish reddish orange in appearance with a slight clear meniscus. The aromatic nose is dominated by rich, sweet bake fruits, followed by what I describe as a sense of overwhelming meat, rubber tires and assorted herbs with a hint of spiciness and some residual alcoholic heat. The palate is quite rich, full-bodied, a tad of sweetness, spicy and relatively soft and smooth with a degree of old vine complexity but still contains a degree of awkwardness in the middle palate where the fruit seems to be overwhelmed by a wall of herbaceousness and rubber which gives way to a fleeing flash of oak. The flavor profile is pretty much the same as my previous tasting of this in 9/29/18. While I do think that this may still have some mojos to last for at least the short (3 years) to mid-term (7 years), but I do not think that it will get any better. Personally, my best experience with was back in 10/26/11 when I first tried this while it was in it’s early years of life. Unfortunately, I won’t have the pleasure of finding out firsthand since this is my last of the 5 bottles I that got back in 2010.

  • This wine has got better and better in the last year or so. Its still exceptionally young and needs quite some decanting. In fact, its almost always better the next day, to give you an idea of how much air it needs. However, the flavour and depth are well worth waiting for. Chock full of black fruit, mulberry, black cherry, still tons of acidity and a strong tannic backbone. The tennis are beginning to soften and i think this wine will be excellent for several years to come. Hugely pleasurable now (with decanting) but no rush at all to consume these.

  • Dans un style nouveau monde j’aime bien le style riche, big de ce vin. À boire accompagné d’une viande !

  • Deep ruby colored. Dark plum, licorice and dark olive in the nose. On the palate lots of dark berries, some dark chocolate and soft earthy notes. Medium+ to full bodied with a medium acidity in the background. Silky tannins and a good complexity. Already some nice aging notes. Great balance and a medium long finish.

  • All you can expect from a great Aussie Shiraz.

  • Appearance: clear deep ruby with garnet at the rim.
Nose: clean, medium plus intensity. Aromas of nutmeg, dark plum, dried plum, cooked fruits, licorice, dill, cedar, toast, savoury, meaty, prosciutto, blackberry, black olive, violet, milk chocolate. It's developing.
Palate: dry, medium plus acidity, medium plus tannins, high alcohol, full body, medium plus flavour intensity. Flavours align with nose with dried plum and dark chocolate standing out. The finish is medium plus and very close to long.
Overall, it's a very good wine. Can drink now, but has potential for further ageing. It's a great example of Barossa shiraz with excellent balance, concentrated fruit but not punching on the face. Tertiary aromas and flavours along with bottle ageing offer great complexity.

  • Needs significant time to breath, as this was far better the second night. Transformed from thick and jammy to smooth and rich overnight.

If I had another bottle, I'd try again in 5 years

  • Dark inky reddish purple orange colour with bits of sedimentation in the bottom of the glass. An intensely fruit-driven nose with impressions of black pepper, meat, mild oak with considerable alcoholic heat. This big wine is medium full-bodied, mouth coating, flavorful and quite intense as a Barossa Shiraz should. Upon opening, this wine tasted a bit astringent and a taste sensation similar to flat carbonated water, and noticibly copious amounts of alcohol. In terms of the flavour profile, it has rich ripe blackish blue and dark red fruits, a bovine profile, black pepper, with a touch of vanilla oak and a faint earthy mineral finish. It’s been about 4 years since I had this wine and it tasted much more smooth, focused and refined in some ways. However, I believe it’s also on its last legs. Though still intensely fruit-driven it seems like structurally this wine is about to fall apart. I would recommend the Amon Ra of this particular vintage should be consumed and enjoyed sooner rather than later. Cheers!

  • I had tasted this previously and was blown away by nose & taste.
This evening was hoping recreate the same feeling, but slightly disappointed.
This is a wine which clearly need plenty of time decanted, I only got 1 Hrs of time.
Still, the aromas, flavour and taste are phenomenal .... I like this one.
From the tasting, plenty of pontential for the future !!!

  • Nez sur les fruits noirs, la fumée, boisé noble. Très concentré et riche, avec une sensation sucrée, à la limite du surextrait pour moi.

  • This wine has evolved or aged somewhat since I last tried this nearly three years ago as evidence by the sediments forming at the bottom of the bottle. Nonetheless it still able to retain its big and intensely fruity core accented by a rich vanilla oak treatment and a spicy finish. I must say that the alcoholic component is rather pronounced at this juncture. Perhaps its still in the middle of its transitional stage? But in spite it all, its still a very enjoyable wine and a rather intriging vintage/version of the iconic Amon Ra that I have had the pleasure of trying.

  • Dark purplish black in color with aromatic fruity nose accented by a pleasant licorice essence. The palette is dominated by a strong fruity core comprised of mostly dark cherry and blueberries with a touch of spice and lovely oak treatment. Its beautiful and impeccably balance (smooth) despite its young age. This is a big, fruit-driven wine with amazing concentration, definitely a great effort on an off year. Reminiscent of the '04 vintage. A few more years of bottle aging should bring out its full potential. Will have to re-taste after 2 years.

  • Drank with friends - Amon Ra vertical from 2004-2008. Still very young. Nice backbone and not overpowering but it was not as open as it could be.

  • I was excited to drink another bottle of this wine after my tasting two weeks earlier but was significantly disappointed. The one change in factor: I shipped the wine to my in-laws in Florida. The wine took 2 days to transit during a cold spell along the East Coast, and we let it rest for a good week before consuming. Nonetheless, it was very disappointing relative to the previous bottle: tannic, unpolished, mediocre.

  • Remarkably smooth, only slightly decanted, very little tannin, inky purple. As good as any of the other vintages.

  • Mr. Glaetzer has done it again. If you enjoy his style you will love it. Long finish. Very nice fruit. Needs time.

  • London Wine Fair - day three (London): Jeez - this is not a gentle experience. Black - massive fruit of tar, liquorice - very tannic, massive sweet fruit. Huge. This will need years to come round. Not really my style, but I can appreciate the quality and see why some people would like this.

  • Christmas Cabs and Syrahs (Farpointe Cellar): The nose had cherry, grilled meat, dried berries, coffee, and a little licorice at the end. The palate was soft and rich, with blueberry, cherry, roasted meat, licorice, and a smoky finish.
