An evening through the Loire valley (Imperial Treasure SPD, Paragon): Next up was another bracket of (blinded) Dagueneaus. These were generally of darker hue than the 1st flight. This one had a slightly oxidative nose, like chrysanthemum tea, or beer left unchilled. On the palate, similar characteristics though it was buffered with enough acidity that it still seemed fresh. Finished with a slight bitter note. This was my first 03 Pur Sang so it'll be interesting to try another some other time to see if they (03 PSs) are all of similar traits...

A wine with really unique character. Color was straw / hay. Some of the traits of a SB from Loire in terms of grass and light note of lemon and tropical fruit, but with far more depth and complexity. Dageneau was a truly one of the world's greatest winemakers

Medium Straw color with light viscosity. The nose was clean with medium intensity and notes of red apple, honey, quartz minerality and light lemon zest. The alcohol was balanced with no noticeable tannin, however acidity was slight diminished from age. This wine was surprisingly complex with palate components showing both complexity of age and soft character. More red apple on the palate with light citrus, and soft toast character. Delicious, however not much more time left for consumption. Drink up.

Pretty nose of lemon, honey and some smoky notes. Pure elegance on the palate with some lemon grass, stone/mineral and a long flavorful finish. Understated compared to the 05 I had recently, but still very nice.

Beautiful pale straw color. Rich, viscous body that weighs nicely on the palate. Vibrant flavors of sweet grapefruit, tangy lemon and mineral. The fruit and acid are so delicately balanced - muscle and grace in a glass. A real testament to this late-great winemaker.

A great wine and posssibly the best Sauv Blanc I've had. OBVIOUSLY better than an '02 recently opened. This had multi-dimensional fruit and spice, with lime zest, grapefruit, and ginger topping the list. Goes on and on. Benchmark!

Syrahs of the World and More; 6/24/2008-6/26/2008 (Various Dining Locales, San Francisco): Healthy light yellow color with good pungent (alright, I'll say it-cat pee) varietal character. Not racy but not flabby either. Somewhat hollow middle and dilute, but good nonetheless and one of the better '03 Loire whites I've tasted. Although this is faint praise, this was very different and much better than my one previous experience with this wine.

Light golden color. Opens with an exaggerated pungent, citrus smell which is quickly overtaken by a mix of tropical fruits. Rich with barely adequate acidity to hold it together. Better than I expected for the year, but living on the edge and in the end, freakishly ripe and too heavy. I want more snap from a Loire valley Sauvignon. It's wines like this that leave me with no regrets about having no '03 European whites in the cellar.

Blind White Wine Tasting (Chicago IL): Tasted blind at wine tasting. Rich and assertive. Big fruit, seems to combine tropical fruit and citrus in an interesting, exotic package. Good acidity and minerality provide length and punch at the finish. Perhaps not my favorite vintage of this wine, but really well made.

No formal note. Tasted blind. More acid relative to the '03 Buisson Renard bottling (see TN), which was also included in this tasting. Tropical fruit. I liked this wine quite a bit, though, again, it's extremely ripe stuff.

Double Blind 1993s From Around the World (Hughes House - Chicago IL): I thought this was slightly corked with a cardboard aromatic note and muted, musty fruit with a slightly bitter finish. Others just thought this old and tired.

Obvious fruit sweetness on the nose. Alsation-like with musk early but fruit get linear and drys out quickly. May have seen a touch of old wood.
